FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation is a non-invasive process that uses micro-needles to implant pigment deposits into the dermal layer of the scalp to make it appear as if no hair loss has occurred whatsoever. After the treatments have been performed you will look like you have a full head of real hair.

The SMP process is an effective means of treatment for clients with thinning hair or a complete loss of hair. Scalp micropigmentation is ideal for providing a thicker density to existing hair while clients who have total hair loss can get a whole new look with a five-o-clock shadow aesthetic along the scalp.

Many of our clients have tried other treatments such as topical sprays, creams, and hair transplants. But when those have proven ineffective, ZangSMP delivers results.

How many treatments do I need?

Scalp micropigmentation will usually require two treatments, administered one week from each other. We suggest two treatments because the skin tends to reject some amount of the pigment shortly after the pigment is implanted into the scalp. That level of rejection tends to vary from one client to the next and so we administer a second treatment within a week of the first one. While the client will typically see some immediate result after the first treatment, the second treatment ensures the client's satisfaction with the results.

In some instances, a third treatment might be required to achieve the objectives that have been set forth during the initial consultation with one of our practitioners. That additional treatment is often administered anywhere from one to three months after the second treatment. However, the decision for undergoing the third treatment is made after examining if the two earlier treatments have yielded the best results.

How long is each treatment?

Every client is different, the length of time for a treatment can vary greatly from one individual to the next based on their specific hair loss challenges. An SMP treatment can last as little as two to as many as four hours. The first treatment will often take longer because the hairline and foundational layer of the micropigmentation are constructed during that session. Second and third treatment sessions are usually somewhat shorter, but the length of time for those sessions is largely dependent upon how much of the pigment has been rejected by the skin.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Ultimately, you decide on the construction of the hairline. Your practitioner will discuss the various attributes that should be taken into consideration when making a decision. Above all, you want the hairline to look entirely natural and it must be tailored to fit your particular features. From there, an appropriate hairline will be chosen and applied.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

That's all you need. Three treatments should be sufficient for achieving the results you want. Just keep in mind that you can help ensure the best results for your SMP treatments by following the after-care instructions that are provided to every client. Those instructions will tell you everything you need to know about caring for and preserving the appearance of your scalp micropigmentation.

We offer a one year guarantee on all work performed by ZangSMP. If you start to notice visible signs of the pigment fading or becoming lighter within one year of receiving your last treatment, we will be happy to perform any necessary touch-up work for free.

What are the aftercare instructions?

These instructions are the key to ensuring that your treatments are successful. We strongly recommend you follow this set of directions, a list of post-treatment do's and dont's – do not touch or wash your scalp, do not workout, and do not cut your hair for 96 hours after treatment. Many of our clients ask if the pigment will stain or smear when sleeping and the answer to that question is no. A hat may be worn after treatment as well. The micropigmentation will not be damaged.

When will a touch-up be necessary?

Much like with any type of ink deposited into the skin, there will be some visible indication of fading. While SMP is a permanent procedure that is intended to last for the rest of your life, the pigment can become faded and discolored. You may start to notice these changes anywhere from five to eight years after your first set of three treatments are administered.

Will I miss any work during treatment?

Since you are not having a surgical procedure performed on your head or skin, you can expect no downtime to prevent you from going to work. A majority of our clients will receive treatment and go back to work the very next day.

Will people be able to tell I have had the treatment done?

Is SMP Painful?

This is a tough question to answer as every client is different. Some have a greater tolerance for pain and discomfort than others. But keep in mind, this is a non-invasive procedure so any sensations that might be felt should be mostly mild if not slightly annoying. If you have had a tattoo, SMP is far less painful by comparison. For those who have not had a tattoo in the past, the level of discomfort ranges from one individual to the next. But since we want every client to have a positive experience with scalp micropigmentation, our practitioners will take every precaution to keep the client safe and healthy.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

During the initial consultation, one of our practitioners will discuss the challenges of your hair loss and the goals you wish to achieve. Once we get an understanding of the classification that applies to your hair loss, a treatment plan can be established and implemented for solving the issue.

We classify the level of hair loss for each client on the Norwood scale. Clients at a six or seven on that scale will need to keep the shaved look due to how much micropigmentation will be required on the scalp. When the hair at the back and sides continues to grow in, a significant contrast will be visible between the pigment and your actual hair. This is due to a lack of texture in the pigment and a distinct texture of the hair. Keeping the shaved look will help to eliminate that problem.

Some clients may request SMP treatments as a means for adding density to the hairline or at the back of the head. But a client must first have enough of their actual hair left with which to blend the SMP treatment in order to be considered a viable candidate for the procedure.

Do you perform scar concealment?

Scars due to surgery or injury can be successfully concealed through scalp micropigmentation. ZangSMP offers these treatments to help clients hide any such scars that exist on the head.

Both FUE and FUT transplant scars can be concealed with SMP.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Clients who come to ZangSMP in need of filler treatments or scar concealment will need to cut their hair to the shortest length possible to make the scalp micropigmentation procedure more effective. For clients with a Norwood six or seven classification for hair loss, shaving the head is necessary and it will need to be kept at that length to enjoy the best results from treatment.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

An effective maintenance routine will be discussed as to the best practices that should be utilized for preserving your micropigmentation. We also have a link to our products recommendation page on our website.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

Since the scalp micropigmentation procedure has been performed in the epidermis, there is no reason not to shave and wash the scalp each day. You won't damage the pigment. Be sure you first follow the four day after-care period to ensure the best results directly after treatment.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Direct sunlight can accelerate the natural fading and discoloration of the pigment. The best course of action for protecting your scalp micropigmentation treatment is to avoid direct sunlight when possible. That means wearing a hat on your head or using a high SPF sunscreen to preserve the appearance of your SMP treatments when spending any length of time in the sun.

How much does SMP cost?

Since each client is different, the cost of treatment for one individual may be higher or lower than the cost of treatment for another individual. It's a similar answer to the length of time needed for treatment. Everyone has different goals and varying levels of hair loss. But with that said, the average cost for scar concealment treatment is around $800-$1000 per session. For class two to class four hair loss, the price is $2400-$3400. Class five to class seven hair loss is $3400-$4200. Top of the scalp with scar concealment ranges from $4200-$5200 for two to three treatments.

When are the payments due?

Clients are expected to put down a $400 booking deposit to guarantee the first appointment for treatment. The waiting time for an appointment is about eight weeks at the moment. Payments are then split half and half between the two primary SMP treatments. If a third treatment is needed, payment can be made at that time. Financing is available.
