SMP For Alopecia
Alopecia is a challenging condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to hair loss in various forms. Some people experience alopecia areata, which shows up as one or more random bald patches on the scalp. This can sometimes escalate to alopecia areata totalis, resulting in the loss of all hair on the scalp. In more severe cases, alopecia areata universalis occurs, leading to a complete loss of hair on the scalp, face, and body. There’s also a type called scarring alopecia, where inflammation destroys hair follicles and replaces them with scar tissue, often due to a skin condition called lichen planopilaris.
For those dealing with these types of hair loss, finding effective solutions can feel overwhelming. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) offers a helping hand by creating the appearance of hair growth and camouflaging areas affected by hair loss. It’s a non-invasive treatment that can dramatically enhance your appearance and boost confidence, providing a sense of normalcy and control over the condition.
Whether you’re dealing with patchy loss or more extensive baldness, SMP can help by giving the look of a full, even head of shaved hair.
What is SMP?
SMP is a non-surgical procedure that is used to treat a variety of hair thinning and hair loss conditions, including alopecia. It is a designed form of tattooing applied to your scalp that gives the appearance of hair follicles.
At Zang SMP, we use organic, plant-based pigments that are deposited into the scalp. Because these pigments mimic the appearance of hair follicles, the result is life-changing. Rather than having a bald head, SMP treatment gives you a cropped (buzzed) look.
There’s no need to have surgery or a painful hair transplant. With SMP for men, your head of hair will look how you want. If you suffer from a bald head that you did not choose, we can help. SMP gives your head the hair you need to improve your image.
Additionally, hair transplants are almost never a suitable solution for alopecia, given the nature of this condition. Alopecia areata is unpredictable, and since the patches can appear anywhere, there is no “safe zone” to extract donor grafts from. In cases where alopecia affects the entire head, there are no available donor grafts at all. This creates a very distressing situation for most alopecia sufferers, who frequently resort to wearing hairpieces or hats in order to hide their condition.
Benefits of SMP For Alopecia
SMP is particularly beneficial for individuals suffering from various forms of alopecia, offering both aesthetic enhancements and emotional boosts. Here are some of the key benefits:
- Simulates a full head of closely shaven hair
- Restores a youthful or appropriately mature hairline
- Disguises burns, birthmarks, and other scars
- Effectively masks all forms of alopecia
- Enhances the density appearance with existing hair
- Hides scars from previous hair transplants
For those battling alopecia, where hair loss can be unpredictable and widespread, SMP provides a reliable solution that maintains its look regardless of future hair loss. It offers a permanent, maintenance-free appearance that doesn't just boost the way individuals look but also how they feel about themselves, restoring confidence lost to alopecia's visible symptoms.
What causes alopecia areata?
Alopecia areata is one of the autoimmune diseases where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles, leading to hair loss.
What are the symptoms of alopecia areata?
The primary symptoms of alopecia areata include patchy hair loss where hair falls out in small, round patches on the scalp. It might progress to more extensive hair loss forms like alopecia totalis.
Is there a difference between alopecia areata and diffuse alopecia areata?
Yes, while traditional alopecia areata results in patchy bald spots, diffuse alopecia areata causes a sudden, widespread thinning of hair across the scalp, making it less patchy and more uniform in hair loss. SMP treatments can help with both.
Is SMP a Scalp Tattoo?
SMP is similar to a traditional tattoo. But the needles, machine, and pigmentation used for treatment are different. Additionally, SMP treatment goes two layers deep into your skin, whereas a tattoo goes five layers deep or more.
How Many SMP Treatments Will I Need?
SMP is typically two to three treatments. Treatments number one and two are typically one week apart. If a third treatment is needed, that will take place anywhere from 1 to 3 months later.
Concerns Addressed with SMP
In addition to alopecia, SMP can treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Male pattern baldness
- Female pattern baldness
- Patchy hair loss
- Thinning hair, including thin hair on the sides of your head and on the top of your head
- Scar tissue/scarring
- Hair follicle loss due to aging, genetics, hormones, auto-immune diseases, or medications
