Best Scalp Micropigmentation in Los Angeles (SMP)
FAQs
What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) represents an advanced, non-invasive method in which carefully formulated, plant-based pigments are applied to the scalp’s outer layer with precision. This technique produces the visual effect of individual hair follicles, giving the scalp a denser and more uniform appearance while maintaining a completely natural look.
Residents of Los Angeles often choose this treatment to achieve a sharp, well-groomed appearance despite thinning hair or partial baldness. It is also highly effective in refining areas of hair that appear sparse or in enhancing the outcomes of prior hair transplant procedures by adding realistic-looking density and improving overall scalp aesthetics.
How many treatments do I need?
Clients in Los Angeles should typically plan for a minimum of two SMP sessions, spaced roughly seven days apart. The first session often appears lighter as the scalp begins its natural healing process, which makes the follow-up session essential for deepening the pigment and refining finer details. In some cases, a third session scheduled within one to three months may be recommended to ensure the final result is as natural, even, and long-lasting as possible.
How long is each treatment?
SMP treatments generally last between two and four hours, with the initial appointment being the longest. During this first session, a custom hairline is carefully designed and the foundational pigment is applied. Subsequent sessions usually take less time, depending on how the scalp has absorbed the pigment and the amount of adjustment needed to achieve a fully balanced, realistic appearance.
Who decides on the construction of the hairline?
In Los Angeles, designing the hairline is a collaborative effort between you and your SMP technician. Your facial structure, personal preferences, and desired aesthetic are all carefully considered to create a hairline that is natural, flattering, and tailored specifically to you.
I've already had 3 treatments, now what?
After completing three SMP sessions, you can immediately enjoy the results while following the recommended aftercare instructions. Our Los Angeles clients benefit from a one-year warranty that covers complimentary touch-ups in case of any fading during that period. For most clients, no additional treatments are needed for several years once the initial sessions are completed.
A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?
For most people in Los Angeles, SMP results can last approximately five to eight years without requiring maintenance. Although the pigments are designed to be long-lasting, environmental factors such as sun exposure and the natural aging of the skin may gradually cause some fading over time.
What are the aftercare instructions?
It is important to follow aftercare instructions carefully after your SMP treatment. For the first four days, avoid wetting the treated area, minimize activities that cause excessive sweating, and delay any haircuts. Hats may be worn immediately, and normal sleeping patterns can continue. We provide a detailed aftercare guide in PDF format to help clients throughout the healing process and ensure the pigment lasts as long as possible.
So I don't need to take time off from work?
That is correct. SMP is a non-invasive procedure that requires no downtime, allowing most Los Angeles clients to return to work and daily routines the same day or shortly after treatment. Following the aftercare instructions will support optimal healing and pigment retention.
Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?
Right after the procedure, the pigment may appear slightly darker and mild redness may be noticeable. These effects are temporary and typically subside within two to three days. Once the scalp has fully healed, the pigment settles to a natural tone that closely resembles real hair follicles and is virtually invisible to the casual observer.
Does it hurt?
SMP is generally far less uncomfortable than traditional tattooing. Our team takes care to make every session as comfortable and relaxed as possible, ensuring that the entire process is smooth, stress-free, and tailored to your comfort from beginning to end.
Do I need to keep the shaved look?
During your consultation, we take the time to carefully examine your scalp and talk through your personal goals, ensuring that the treatment plan we create fits your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. For Los Angeles clients who fall into the Norwood 6 or 7 categories, keeping a clean-shaven appearance is generally recommended because SMP pigments do not grow with natural hair, and allowing surrounding hair to remain longer could lead to an uneven or patchy look.
For clients looking to enhance the appearance of density, the pigment can be skillfully layered into existing hair to give the impression of a thicker, fuller scalp. This approach is especially effective for areas that are thinning in the crown or along the frontal hairline, allowing individuals to maintain their natural hair length while achieving a more uniform and visually dense result that blends seamlessly with their overall hair.
Do you also do scar concealment?
Absolutely. Scar concealment is included as part of our scalp micropigmentation services and is highly effective for minimizing the appearance of scars caused by prior FUE or FUT procedures, as well as those resulting from injuries or trauma. Our Los Angeles clients have experienced remarkable improvements in both appearance and confidence after we carefully apply pigment to blend the scarred areas with the surrounding scalp, producing a uniform, natural, and seamless result.
Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?
For treatments focused on density enhancement or scar camouflage, it is recommended that clients keep their hair at its normal length so that we can accurately match pigment placement with existing hair. Clients in the Norwood 6–7 range should shave their heads before the session, and continuing to maintain this shaved look afterward ensures the SMP appears smooth, cohesive, and realistic.
What do I do for optimal maintenance?
During your consultation, our SMP experts will outline the steps necessary to maintain your results effectively. For those in Los Angeles, we provide a personalized aftercare routine designed to prolong pigment life and maintain a natural appearance. We also offer complimentary consultations to review your maintenance plan in detail and provide guidance tailored specifically to your scalp and treatment.
Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?
No, there is no risk to your SMP results from regular shaving. Maintaining a shaved scalp is perfectly safe and will not interfere with the pigment. We provide recommendations for the best shaving tools and scalp-care products that are compatible with SMP, and clients in Los Angeles can reference our guide to ensure their scalp remains healthy and their results remain consistent.
Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?
Continuing to shave your head will not affect the treatment in any way. Since SMP pigment is applied to the upper layers of the skin, everyday shaving and scalp care do not impact the results. Many clients in Los Angeles confidently maintain a shaved style after treatment without experiencing fading or irritation, making it a safe and reliable choice for ongoing grooming.
How much will the SMP treatment cost?
The cost of SMP treatments depends on each individual’s requirements and the areas of the scalp being addressed. Most clients undergo two sessions spaced roughly a week apart, with the possibility of scheduling a third session within one to three months if additional refinement is desired. For scar camouflage, prices generally fall between $800 and $1,000, depending on the size and location of the scar. Treatments for Norwood stages 2 to 4 usually range from $2,400 to $3,400, while procedures for stages 5 to 7 typically cost between $3,400 and $4,200. Full-scale treatments that combine extensive scalp coverage with scar concealment are commonly priced between $4,200 and $5,200, offering a thorough and customized approach for achieving natural-looking results.
How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?
Maintaining the vibrancy and longevity of your SMP requires careful protection from the sun. We recommend wearing hats or applying high-quality sunscreen whenever you are outdoors. For Los Angeles clients who spend time in direct sunlight, taking these precautions is particularly important, as ultraviolet exposure can gradually lighten the pigment and affect the overall appearance of your scalp.
How much does it cost?
SMP pricing depends on the extent of the area being treated and whether scar concealment is included. Scar camouflage sessions typically cost between $800 and $1,000. For thinning or balding areas, Norwood stages 2 to 4 generally range from $2,400 to $3,400, while stages 5 to 7 usually fall between $3,400 and $4,200. Treatments that combine full scalp coverage with scar concealment generally range from $4,200 to $5,200, offering a complete, customized solution for achieving a natural and consistent result.
When are the payments due?
A $400 deposit is required to secure your booking. Most appointments have an eight-week lead time, so early scheduling is encouraged. The remaining balance is typically split between your first two sessions for convenience, and flexible financing options are available for Los Angeles clients who prefer additional payment flexibility.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!
Laura
I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

Thank u so much Walter and Ridd for your excellent customer service and I can't be any happier with the results. Walter is truly a master of his craft and he was able to hide my scar very well. I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
