FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

This is a non-surgical process that is performed by depositing organic plant-based pigment directly into the dermal layer of the scalp. These deposits are designed to make it look as if the client has a full head of natural-looking hair. The SMP procedure can be administered to clients who are totally bald or struggling with thinning hair. These treatments can add density to existing hair or replicate the appearance of a tightly shaved head that resembles a five o-clock shadow.

SMP is the natural alternative to those ineffective hair transplants and topical creams and formulas that are incapable of delivering the expected results. When those options fail, scalp micropigmentation can get the job done.

How many treatments do I need?

Some clients will need only two treatments, some may require an additional third treatment. The initial two treatments are standard and they are administered about a week of one another. The pigment from the first treatment can be rejected by the skin, that's why a second one is performed shortly after.

That follow-up treatment will put back the pigments that were lost due to the skin's reaction and give you the results you want.

But two may not be enough for some clients who suffer significant rejection after those initial treatments. The third treatment will restore the pigments that have been lost so the scalp appears to have natural hair.

How long is each treatment?

Treatments can last around two to four hours in length. The necessary length of your treatment won't be determined until we know what type of hair loss you are experiencing. Keep in mind the first treatment is often longer because that is when we construct the hairline and establish the foundational layer. Second or third treatements may take a shorter period of time depending on how much pigment was rejected from earlier treatments.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

You decide on the construction of the hairline but your practitioner will advise you on the best options that are most appropriate for your facial features. The objective is to ensure the hairline looks entirely natural so you can enjoy the desired results for solving your hair loss challenges.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

If you have received three scalp micropigmentation treatments, then you have nothing left to do but admire the results of the procedure that has been performed in full. But in order for the scalp micropigmentation to reach its full potential, you want to be sure to follow the set of after-care instructions closely and carefully. These will assist you in preserving the appearance of the pigment once it's been implanted into the dermal layer of your scalp.

Zang SMP offers a one year satisfaction guarantee. If any of the pigment starts to fade or grow lighter within twelve months of your third and final treatment, our practitioners will be happy to provide touch-up services free of charge.

When will a touch-up be necessary?

Any form of tattooing involves the implantation of pigments into the skin. As time passes, the skin is exposed to all types of wear and tear, injury, exposure to the sun, and other impacts. These can all have an adverse effect on the pigment and cause it to fade, lighten, or become damaged. With that said, the average time when a touch-up is necessary can be around five to eight years after the initial set of scalp micropigmentation treatments are administered to the client.

What are the aftercare instructions?

In the days after a scalp micropigmentation treatment, you will be issued a set of after-care instructions by your practitioner. These should be followed to ensure that you get the best results from your SMP treatment. The instructions are rather simple – you will be instructed not to touch or wash your scalp, avoid cutting your hair, and refrain from participating in any workouts for a period of four days. The reason for these instructions is to help the skin retain the pigment and ward off contamination.

You can sleep as you would normally since the pigment will not smudge or stain the pillow or the bedding and you are free to wear a hat if you wish.

Will I miss any work during treatment?

There is no downtime associated with scalp micropigmentation treatments because this procedure is non-invasive. Our clients come in for treatment and go back to work and resume their normal routines the next day.

Will people be able to tell I have had the treatment done?

In the days after treatment, the scalp will show signs that you have received scalp micropigmentation. The skin will appear red and slightly irritated and the pigment will appear much darker and more vivid than usual. But these symptoms will dissipate after a couple days at which point there will be very little indication that you have received any SMP treatments.

Is SMP Painful?

Some clients have a higher pain threshold than others. Each individual is different when it comes to the pain or discomfort level associated with SMP. Clients who have received tattoos in the past find scalp micropigmentation less uncomfortable by comparison. For those who have never had a tattoo, the discomfort level is commensurate with any other non-surgical procedure that is performed on the skin.

We want every client to have a positive experience during each SMP treatment session. So we will make every effort to maintain the health and safety of all of our clients when they come to ZangSMP for treatment.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

The initial consultation will help the practitioner examine the level of hair loss for each client. Treatment options will then be discussed to solve the client's concerns about that hair loss.

Once the examination is complete, an appropriate treatment plan will be decided upon as determined by the Norwood scale.

Clients who are categorized as a Norwood Six or Norwood Seven will need to keep the shaved look as the texture of the hair and the lack of texture on the pigment will not match and present an artificial aesthetic. Shaving the head will help to avoid that problem.

Do you perform scar concealment?

ZangSMP has helped many clients conceal scars due to surgery or injury, including FUE and FUT transplant scars, with scalp micropigmentation.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Clients who are seeking filler treatments or scar concealment will need to cut their hair to as short a length as possible. Clients at a Norwood Six or Norwood Seven for hair loss will need to shave the head entirely and plan on doing so after receiving SMP treatment.

What should I do for optimal maintenance?

We will provide suggestions for products to use to maintain your treatment. Please check the link to our products recommendation page.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

You will not affect the scalp micropigmentation if you shave your head. The pigments will not be damaged or impacted in any way.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

The best way to protect your scalp micropigmentation from sunlight is to avoid any long-term exposure. If that is unavoidable, keep exposure to short periods of time and apply a strong SPF sunscreen to the scalp. You can also wear a hat for added protection.

How much does SMP cost?

There is no set cost for every client. The expenses for treatment can vary from one client to another based on the particular hair loss challenges that need to be solved. There are many treatment plans available with SMP and your practitioner will review those with you. But for those clients who trying to create a preliminary budget for meeting their scalp micropigmentation needs, these are the average costs:

SMP treatment for Norwood class two to class four hair loss is $2400-$3400. Norwood class five to class seven hair loss is $3400-$4200. Top of the scalp with scar concealment is around $4200-$5200 for two to three treatments. Treatments for scar concealment can cost around $800-$1000 per session.

When are the payments due?

Clients are asked to put down a deposit of $400 to secure a booking. Be advised there is an eight week waiting list for clients who wish to schedule treatment. Payments are due at the time of treatment and the overall cost will be split between the two (or possibly) three treatment sessions.
