Frequently Asked Questions

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

SMP is a non-invasive technique that deposits organic plant-based pigment into the dermal layer of the scalp. This pigment stimulates hair follicles to replicate the look of a full head of hair. Zang has performed this procedure on clients who have thinning hair and clients who have gone completely bald. In the case of the former, scalp micropigmentation can add density to existing hair and for those clients who count themselves among the latter, a bald head can sport a look similar to a 5 o'clock shadow.

Many of our clients have turned to scalp micropigmentation when alternative options such as hair transplants and topical solutions have failed to deliver the expected results.

How many treatments do I need?

Scalp micropigmentation is administered in two treatments. These are spaced one week apart from one another. The reason we recommend two treatments is because the skin routinely rejects some amount of pigment, it's a natural response that is to be expected. The second treatment is performed to restore the pigment that has been lost and give you the results you want.

In some cases, a client may require a third treatment. This is performed anywhere from one to three months after the second for the purpose of replacing any pigment that was rejected from the previous treatments.

How long is each treatment?

The average length of time for a scalp micropigmentation treatment is typically two to four hours with the first of the two treatments possibly taking longer than the second or third. This is due to the fact that we construct the hairline and establish the foundational layer of the SMP during the first. The following treatments are typically shorter in length but we can't promise this will be the case when you receive treatment. The practitioner will need to assess your hair loss situation and then a treatment plan can be developed to meet your needs.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

You and the practitioner will work together to construct the appropriate hairline for your particular features and objectives for solving your hair loss problem. We want to ensure that your hairline appears completely natural and you will review your options with the practitioner before the treatment is applied.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

If you have received three treatments total, you will require no further work. But you will need to focus on following the after care instructions that are provided after your treatments are complete. These are specially designed to help you protect and preserve the pigment so it settles properly and delivers the expected results.

All work performed by ZangSMP is fully guaranteed for one year. If you see the pigments prematurely fading or lightening, you can return to our office for a quick touch-up, free of charge.

When will a touch-up be necessary?

Pigments that are implanted in the skin will eventually lighten and fade over time. It's a natural fact because the skin ages and sustains wear and tear. But this is also a permanent procedure, just like a tattoo, so you will need to have it touched-up every so often. We have found most of our clients will come back for an additional treatment in about five to eight years after their first set of scalp micropigmentation treatments.

What are the aftercare instructions?

The instructions are simple and should be followed for a period of four days after treatment. This will help to preserve the pigment and avoid contamination or premature fading. You must not touch or wash your scalp, participate in any workouts, or cut your hair for 96 hours post-treatment. You are allowed to wear a hat and you do not need to make any adjustments to your sleep routine.

Will I miss any work during treatment?

SMP is a non-invasive hair loss solution that does not require any downtime. So you won't miss any work during treatment. You can return to work the very next day!

Will people be able to tell I have had the treatment done?

People may notice some discoloration of the scalp in the immediate days after treatment. The skin might look red or irritated but that will go away after two or three days. The pigments will appear much darker than normal but once they settle in, the SMP will look completely natural. The only way someone will know that you've had treatments performed is if you tell them.

Is SMP Painful?

Since every client is different, the pain threshold for each can vary from one individual to the next. For most clients who undergo SMP, the pain is not as intense as a traditional tattoo. But keep in mind, this is a non-invasive procedure so any sensations that might be felt should be mostly mild if not slightly annoying, at best. The comfort and safety of our clients is top priority and all ZangSMP practitioners will take every step to ensure a pleasant and healthy experience.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

Starting with your initial consultation, a practitioner will review your hair loss and the goals for solving the problem. After the consultation, the appropriate treatment plan will be decided upon based on the level of hair loss as per the Norwood scale.

Clients at a six or seven on that scale will need to keep the shaved look because the texture of the hair and the pigment will be drastically different from one another. Placing pigment next to hair can make it very evident that you have received SMP treatments. Keeping the shaved look will help to eliminate that problem.

Do you perform scar concealment?

We perform scalp micropigmentation for treating hair loss and concealing scars. SMP is an effective method for concealing scars due to injury or surgery, including FUE and FUT transplant scars.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Clients who are receiving filler treatments or scar concealment treatments are asked to cut their hair to the shortest possible length before coming to the office for treatment, unless informed to do otherwise.

Clients that have been categorized as a six or seven on the Norwood scale are asked to shave their head completely and will need to continue doing so after treatments are finished.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

ZangSMP will give you a list of suggestions for products to use to maintain your treatment. You can click the link to our products recommendation page for more information.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

Shaving your head will not affect or damage the treatment. Scalp micropigmentation is performed so the pigment reaches the dermal layer of the scalp and remains permanent.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Pigment that is implanted into the skin can start to fade or weaken under repeated exposure to direct sunlight. The best way to protect your SMP is to apply sunscreen to the skin or wear a hat to cover the pigment from the sunlight. This is necessary if you plan to spend more than one hour outdoors in the sun.

How much does SMP cost?

The costs associated with treatment can vary based on the needs and goals of the client.

The average cost for treating Norwood class two to class four hair loss is $2400-$3400. Norwood class five to class seven hair loss is $3400-$4200. Top of the scalp with scar concealment ranges from $4200-$5200 for two to three treatments. Clients who require only scar concealment treatment can expect to pay around $800-$1000 per session.

When are the payments due?

We ask that every client put down a deposit of $400 to secure a booking with a ZangSMP practitioner. We currently have a waiting list of eight weeks to schedule an appointment. Payments are due at the time of each treatment as the costs will be split between both sessions. Financing options are available.
