FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical procedure that uses organic plant-based pigment deposits in the dermal layer of the scalp to give the appearance of a full head of real hair. The process serves as an effective treatment for clients who have thinning hair or have suffered complete hair loss. Scalp micropigmentation can add a thicker density to existing hair or provide a five-o-clock shadow aesthetic for clients who are totally bald. Whatever your situation may be, ZangSMP can deliver the results that other treatment options have failed to provide.

How many treatments do I need?

Most of our clients will need only two scalp micropigmentation treatments applied to the scalp. The two treatments are most effective when administered within one week of each other. We recommend you receive two treatments because the skin has a natural propensity for rejecting some amount of the pigment after it has been implanted. While you will see some results almost immediately after the first treatment, the second treatment will restore some of the pigment that was lost.

The amount of rejection can vary based on the individuals. Some clients may even need a third treatment anywhere from one to three months after the second treatment is administered.

How long is each treatment?

Treatments can last around two to four hours in length. The necessary length of your treatment won't be determined until we know what type of hair loss you are experiencing. Keep in mind the first treatment is often longer because that is when we construct the hairline and establish the foundational layer. Second or third treatments may take a shorter period of time depending on how much pigment was rejected from earlier treatments.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

There are a variety of factors that go into the decision-making process for hairline construction. The main objective is to ensure the hairline appears completely natural. Your practitioner will design a number of options to give you the best hairline to match your unique features and personal preferences.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

After three treatments, simply relax and enjoy your whole new look. Now you just need to focus on preserving the pigment by following the set of aftercare instructions that will be supplied to you after treatment. All ZangSMP work is backed by a one-year guarantee, that means if your pigment fades or lightens up in the next twelve months we will perform any touch-ups free of charge.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Every ZangSMP client will receive a set of after-care instructions that must be followed over a four day period to preserve the pigment and ensure the efficacy of the treatments. To summarize the post-treatment do's and dont's – do not touch or wash your scalp, do not workout, and do not cut your hair for 96 hours after treatment. You will be able to sleep as normal, the pigment will not get smeared or damaged nor will you find any stains on your pillow. clients who enjoy wearing hats are allowed to do so after treatment.

When will a touch-up be necessary?

As long as you have preserved and protected the pigment faithfully you shouldn't need any touch-ups for about five to eight years after the initial two or three treatments. Scalp micropigmentation is a permanent procedure but the pigment will start to fade with time as the skin ages and sustains normal wear and tear. This will not dramatically affect your appearance but you may feel like it's time to have the work touched-up by one of our practitioners.

Will I miss any work during treatment?

Since scalp micropigmentation is a non-invasive procedure there is no downtime. You won't miss any work during or after treatment. Feel free to continue your normal routine.

Will people be able to tell I have had the treatment done?

Nobody will be able to tell you have had treatment done once the pigment settles in fully. However, the skin of your scalp may appear red and the pigment will look much darker than normal. Over the next day or two you should notice the redness disappearing and the pigments softening and settling in. Clients with sensitive skin may be more susceptible to redness that lasts a bit longer.

Is SMP Painful?

Each client handles pain and discomfort in a different way. Some clients find scalp micropigmentation treatments uncomfortable, some have had no such response. Many of our clientele have likened the procedure to the same level of discomfort as getting a tattoo. However, we take client health and safety very seriously and we will make every effort to ensure the process is as painless as possible.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

During the initial consultation, one of our practitioners will discuss the challenges of your hair loss and the goals you wish to achieve. Once we get an understanding of the classification that applies to your hair loss, a treatment plan can be established and implemented for solving the issue.

Clients at a “Norwood 6” or “Norwood 7” classification will need to maintain a shaved look due to the amount of coverage for micropigmentation on top of the scalp. As the hair on the back and along the sides of the head will continue to grow and the SMP will start to become far more noticeable when compared to the texture of real hair that still remains. Keeping the head shaved will help to avoid that increased visibility.

Clients who receive SMP treatments as filler treatments seek them out as a way to add density to the hairline or the crown of the head. In order to be considered a candidate for this type of treatment, the client needs sufficient amounts of hair on the scalp in which to blend the micropigmentation.

Do you perform scar concealment?

Our practitioners perform SMP as a means of scar concealment for scars due to injury or surgery. Both FUE and FUT transplant scars can be concealed with SMP.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Clients who are receiving SMP as a filler treatment or scar concealment procedure will need to cut their hair as short as possible unless told otherwise by the practitioner. For clients with a Norwood six or Norwood seven level of hair loss, we ask that the scalp be completely shaved before coming into the office for treatment.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

We will provide suggestions for products to use to maintain your treatment. Please check the link to our products recommendation page

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

Many of our clients who receive scalp micropigmentation shave their heads daily. The pigment will not be impacted or damaged in any way because it has been implanted deep in the epidermis layer, away from the surface of the skin.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

The best way to protect your SMP from sunlight is to stay out of it. Avoid prolonged direct exposure to the sun and you will preserve the pigment for much longer. However, if you must be out in the sun for longer than an hour, be sure to apply a strong SPF sunscreen to your scalp and wear a hat. Anything that can create a barrier between the skin and the sun will be effective.

How much does SMP cost?

The average cost for scar concealments is around $800-$1000 per treatment. For class two to class four hair loss is $2400-$3400. Class five to class seven hair loss is $3400-$4200. Top of the scalp with scar concealment ranges from $4200-$5200 for two to three treatments.

When are the payments due?

We require a booking deposit of $400 to guarantee your appointment. The usual wait time to come in for treatment is about eight weeks. The remaining payment is split half and half between the two main SMP treatments. We do offer financing to help clients afford the treatments they need.
