What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) in Tustin?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-surgical hair restoration process that inserts organic plant-based pigments into the scalp’s dermal layer. The pigments mimic hair follicles, creating the look of a full head of hair.
We provide the 5 o’clock shadow look for those who are completely bald. If you have thinning hair or require more density after a hair transplant, SMP could be the answer you’re seeking.
What are the benefits of SMP?
SMP provides a non-surgical way to increase visual hair density, especially useful for those with alopecia areata or thinning hair. It enhances thinning hair, giving the impression of more fullness. Suitable for individuals with healthy, normal skin, this technique provides a cosmetic option for improving hair appearance. It can also be used to complement hair restoration surgery, helping to cover scars or areas of reduced density.
How many treatments in Tustin do I need?
A minimum of two treatments, spaced one week apart, is standard for Scalp Micro Pigmentation. This is because the skin may immediately reject some pigment following the first treatment. You’ll see considerable results after the first treatment, with a more finished look after the second. A third session in Tustin, possibly scheduled 1-3 months after the second, will add the final touches.
How long is each treatment?
The length of each session ranges from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the details of the procedure. The first treatment is typically the longest as it involves establishing the hairline and the foundational layer. Subsequent sessions are usually shorter, though this can differ based on the retention of earlier treatments.
Who decides on the construction of the hairline?
The appropriate hairline for you is determined by multiple factors. We adjust the hairline to suit your specific features for the best natural result. We also consider your personal preferences, as different options can look natural for each person.
I've already had 3 treatments, now what?
After you follow the initial aftercare instructions, you can simply enjoy your SMP treatment. We offer a one-year guarantee with our plans, which covers any pigment lightening with a free touch-up. We look forward to seeing you in a few years!
A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?
Expect to need touch-ups every 5-8 years. Although the procedure is permanent, the pigment may lighten over time due to normal wear and tear on the skin.
What are the aftercare instructions?
To ensure minimal fading and avoid contamination, it is important to follow the 4-day post-treatment instructions. This includes refraining from touching, washing, cutting, and physical activities for the first 4 days. You can put on a hat immediately following the treatment. The pigment won’t transfer or stain your pillows. For a full set of aftercare instructions, please review the attached PDF.
So I don't need to take time off from work?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-invasive and nonsurgical treatment with no downtime required. You only need to follow the 4-day aftercare. Many clients complete their treatment and go home the same day, usually starting work again the next day.
Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?
Initially, the pigments will look bold right after the first treatment because they are freshly deposited. They will soften and settle as you sleep overnight. Expect the redness to resolve within 48-72 hours. The intensity of redness varies with skin sensitivity, but clients typically notice a substantial reduction in redness 48 hours after the first treatment. After the initial settling, the result will look fully natural.
Does it hurt?
SMP generally involves less pain than a traditional tattoo for most clients. Pain tolerance varies from person to person, but your health and safety are our primary concerns. We will ensure that the procedure is as comfortable and smooth as possible.
Do I need to keep the shaved look?
Your hair loss will be assessed in a consultation or via a web assessment. After understanding your hair loss category, we will develop a treatment plan, suggest the best style, and look for the SMP procedure.
Clients with Norwood 6-7 hair loss must keep their hair shaved due to the SMP coverage on the top of the head. As the hair on the back and sides continues to grow, the contrast between the SMP and natural hair will be more noticeable. This permanent cosmetic procedure involves using pigmentation to duplicate hair follicles, which will not grow or have a 3D texture.
A filler treatment adds density to the hairline or crown. It is best for individuals who have some natural hair in the area to blend with the SMP.
Do you also do scar concealment?
Absolutely! Scalp Micropigmentation isn’t limited to treating male pattern baldness; it can also hide scars from previous surgeries or injuries, including those from FUE and FUT transplants.
Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?
We normally request that clients have their hair at the shortest length they will maintain for filler treatments or scar concealment unless a different length is requested. For class 6 or 7 hair loss, you will need to shave your head before coming in for the treatment and keep it shaved.
What do I do for optimal maintenance?
We’ll recommend products for maintaining your treatment. Please visit the link to see our recommendations.
Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?
Shaving and washing your head every day is not a problem since the treatment is in the epidermis layer and won’t be damaged. Most clients with this procedure shave daily.
How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?
Excessive direct sunlight can cause the pigments to weaken and damage your treatment and scalp over time. Always wear sunscreen or a hat if you will be in direct sunlight for over an hour.
How much does it cost?
The cost for SMP is determined by the extent of hair loss and the required amount of work. Usually, the first two treatments are held one week apart, with a potential third treatment 1-3 months after the second. For scar concealment, the cost is $800 to $1000 per treatment. Hair loss class 2-4 is priced from $2400 to $3400, while class 5-7 costs between $3400 and $4200. Scar concealment on the top of the scalp ranges from $4200 to $5200 for 2-3 treatments.
When are the payments due?
A $400 deposit is needed to secure your treatment dates with us. The usual wait time for an appointment is around 8 weeks. Payment is split 50/50 between the first two treatments. We also provide the option of financing.
