FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

SMP is a non-invasive technique that deposits organic plant-based pigment into the dermal layer of the scalp. This pigment stimulates hair follicles to replicate the look of a full head of hair. Zang has performed this procedure on clients who have thinning hair and clients who have gone completely bald. In the case of the former, scalp micropigmentation can add density to existing hair and for those clients who count themselves among the latter, a bald head can sport a look similar to a 5 o'clock shadow.

Many of our clients have turned to scalp micropigmentation when alternative options such as hair transplants and topical solutions have failed to deliver the expected results.

How many treatments do I need?

The SMP procedure is performed in two treatments. These are typically administered within a week of each other. Why? It's because the skin has a tendency to reject some portion of the pigment that is implanted during the first treatment session. So in order to get the results you expect, you will need a second treatment to restore some of that lost pigment.

It could also be possible for some clients to require a third and final treatment some one to three months after receiving the second treatment. This is usually for the purpose of supplying any necessary final touches due to loss of pigment from the second treatment.

How long is each treatment?

The length of time for a treatment session can depend on the needs of the client. The average session can run between two to four hours and, in most cases, the first treatment will almost always extend a bit longer than the second. That's because the first treatment is when we construct your hairline and establish the foundational layer of the scalp micropigmentation. The length of the second and even third treatments are often shorter but the length of time is dependent upon the analysis of how much pigment has been rejected from prior treatments.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Our practitioners always work with you to determine the hairline that is best for your specific features. In the end, the SMP treatment must always look entirely natural. We will discuss your options and help to achieve that objective.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

Three treatments are fully sufficient to get the results you want. But we highly recommend that our clients faithfully follow the set of after care instructions that are provided once the treatments have been administered. The instructions are designed to help preserve the look of the scalp micropigmentation once it's been implanted.

ZangSMP guarantees the work for one full year. If you notice the pigments begin to fade or lighten up, you can come back in for a quick touch-up.

When will a touch-up be necessary?

While scalp micropigmentation is a permanent solution to hair loss, there is some wear and tear to be expected. Most of our clients will usually come back in for another treatment in about five to eight years from the initial set of SMP treatments.

What are the aftercare instructions?

You will be instructed not to touch or wash your scalp, not to cut your hair, and not to work out for four days after treatment. This is done to prevent fading and contamination and preserve the pigment for the best possible results. You will be allowed to wear a hat if you prefer and there are no specific restrictions in place for sleeping after treatment. Since the pigment is implanted into the skin, there will be no smudges or staining of your pillow or bedding.

Will I miss any work during treatment?

The scalp micropigmentation procedure is nonsurgical and non-invasive so you will not miss any work during or after treatment. Many of our clients will have the treatments administered and go back to work the day after.

Will people be able to tell I have had the treatment done?

The pigment will look darker and bolder after the first treatment has been freshly deposited. Overnight, the pigment will settle into the shade that better reflects the way it will appear every day. Some clients may also notice some redness and that will fade after two to three days. Clients with sensitive skin may notice more redness than usual. After the initial settling process is complete, the SMP will look completely normal.

Is SMP Painful?

Since every client is different, the pain threshold for each can vary from one individual to the next. For most clients who undergo SMP, the pain is not as intense as a traditional tattoo. But keep in mind, this is a non-invasive procedure so any sensations that might be felt should be mostly mild if not slightly annoying, at best. The comfort and safety of our clients is top priority and all ZangSMP practitioners will take every step to ensure a pleasant and healthy experience.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

Starting with your initial consultation, a practitioner will review your hair loss and the goals for solving the problem. After the consultation, the appropriate treatment plan will be decided upon based on the level of hair loss as per the Norwood scale.

Clients at a six or seven on that scale will need to keep the shaved look because the texture of the hair and the pigment will be drastically different from one another. Placing pigment next to hair can make it very evident that you have received SMP treatments. Keeping the shaved look will help to eliminate that problem.

Do you perform scar concealment?

ZangSMP does perform scar concealment. Scalp micropigmentation is not intended solely for use with clients who are fighting male pattern baldness. SMP can also be a viable option for hiding scars from previous injury or surgery. We are able to conceal FUE and FUT transplant scars with a regimen of scalp micropigmentation treatments.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

If you are visiting ZangSMP to receive filler treatments or scar concealment you will need to cut your hair down to the shortest possible length in order to ensure the treatments are fully effective. If you have been classified at a six or seven on the Norwood scale, you will need to shave your head entirely and continue to do so going forward.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

We will provide suggestions for products to use to maintain your treatment. Please check the link to our products recommendation page.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

You will not damage or affect the scalp micropigmentation treatments if you shave your head. In fact, many of our clients who have received these treatments continue to shave daily. The reason why is because the pigment has been implanted into the dermal layer of the scalp and it will remain there no matter how much you shave your head.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Much like a tattoo, sunlight can fade and weaken pigment in the skin. A little sunlight is safe, but long durations of exposure to the sun can be damaging to the micropigmentation and the skin of your scalp. Always use sunscreen or put on a hat to protect the SMP treatments and the scalp if you plan to be outdoors in bright sunlight for more than one hour.

How much does SMP cost?

As every client is different, so too are the costs from one to the next. That's because the type of treatment needed to solve a client's hair loss challenges can vary and this will affect the costs.

Keeping this in mind, the average cost for Norwood class two to class four hair loss, the price is $2400-$3400. Norwood class five to class seven hair loss is $3400-$4200. Top of the scalp with scar concealment ranges from $4200-$5200 for two to three treatments. Clients who need only scar concealment treatment alone can expect to pay around $800-$1000 per session.

When are the payments due?

A client will leave a deposit of $400 at the time of booking treatment dates with ZangSMP. This secures your appointment which is necessary since there is a waiting list of roughly eight weeks for bookings. Payments are then split half and half between each of the two treatments. We offer financing for clients who qualify.
