Male Pattern Baldness
What is Male Pattern Baldness?
Androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness, is the predominant form of hair loss in men, with 85% experiencing it to varying degrees over their lifetime. The main cause is genetics, leading to hair follicles on the scalp becoming sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Over time, this hormone causes the follicles to shrink, producing finer, weaker hair until none is visible.
The pattern generally begins with a receding hairline and leads to thinning of the crown, eventually causing hair loss on the entire top of the head.
What Causes Male Pattern Baldness?
Genetics and male hormones, specifically androgens, are major contributors to hair loss in men, as androgens also promote hair growth.
Each person's hair grows in a particular cycle. Men who start losing hair have a weakened cycle, which leads to smaller hair follicles over time. This causes men to experience thinning hair, eventually resulting in complete hair loss.
How is Male Pattern Baldness Diagnosed and How Does it Influence Hair Loss?
This hair disorder is diagnosed by its recognizable hair loss pattern, usually starting at the hairline and crown, and is strongly influenced by genetics and hormones.
Stages of Male Pattern Baldness
The Hamilton-Norwood scale is a tool used by hair loss experts to categorize hair loss severity, with stage 1 being the least severe and stage 7 reflecting complete baldness on the top of the head. A patient with Norwood stages 1 through 3 generally displays mild to moderate hairline recession.
Individuals with Norwood 4 to 5 hair loss experience severe loss in the frontal zone and major thinning at the crown. Stages 6 to 7 indicate almost complete or total loss on the top of the scalp.
Some less frequent variations of male pattern baldness are diffuse thinning over the entire scalp without affecting the hairline or loss of hair at the crown with no recession of the hairline.
Treatment For Male Pattern Hair Loss: Scalp Micropigmentation
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical technique used to address male-pattern baldness. It involves tattooing the scalp in a way that mimics the look of hair follicles. No matter the severity of hair loss, SMP can effectively create the illusion of a full head of hair.
SMP differs from hair transplantation, which relies on a finite number of donor grafts, by stimulating hair growth and creating any level of hair density instantly, with no downtime.
We use plant-based, organic pigments at Zang SMP that are applied to the scalp. These pigments mimic the appearance of hair follicles, transforming a bald head into a cropped (buzzed) style.
SMP for men eliminates the need for surgical or painful hair transplant procedures. It helps you achieve the hairstyle you want. If you have a bald head you didn’t choose, we can assist. SMP offers the hair appearance you need to enhance your look.
SMP often requires two to three treatments. The initial two treatments occur one week apart for male-pattern hair loss. If a third treatment is needed, it will be performed one to three months later.
Here’s what you can expect:
- After your first SMP session, the pigments will seem bolder due to their recent application.
- The pigments will show a more settled appearance within 24 hours.
- Within 48 to 72 hours, any redness will have disappeared.
- After the process is done, your hair treatment will appear wholly natural.
