Recognizing Balding: 4 Warning Signs to Watch For

You wake up and are inspecting yourself in the mirror, but what you see is worse than any potential graying. You’re balding.

Luckily, there are several early signs of balding, and if men act quickly enough, they have a decent chance of stopping its progression. So if you notice these four warning signs, it’s time to take the next steps.

Are you experiencing any? Read on to find out.

The Four Early Signs of Balding

For some men, it’s as unlucky as genes. For others, it’s the many decades catching up with them. Whatever the cause, there are warning signs before baldness strikes.

1. Receding Hairline

One of the most sure-fire signs that balding has begun is a receding hairline. This process can occur anytime after puberty, but most men experience some form of it by their thirties.

A receding hairline usually begins above the temples and moves back across the top of the head, leaving a circular area without hair.

A “widow’s peak” may also occur, forming a v-shape in the front.

Receding hairlines are due to genetics and hormone changes. Medicines and surgery are the best options available.

2. Increased Shedding

We all naturally shed in the shower and on pillows, but another sign of balding is when there is a notable increase in pillow and shower hairs.

So what’s normal? It depends.

Those with long hair can lose 50 to 100 hairs a day without any unhealthy side effects. The general rule of thumb is to keep a close eye on the drain and pillowcase. If you notice a sudden increase in the number of hairs falling out of your head, you’ve probably entered one of the first stages of balding.

Some beauty experts suggest sleeping with a silk pillowcase to reduce shedding.

3. Crown-Area Thinning

Another common area affected by hair thinning is the crown. Men may notice their hair growing thinner in a top circular area on the head.

Unfortunately, this is a difficult place to see. Furthermore, the top middle part of the scalp is also the location that is most exposed to the environment. As a result, you may lose up to 50% of your hair here before you even realize it.

The good news is that (if caught early) several methods exist to slow or even stop progressive balding.

4. Slow Growth

Another sign of possible balding is an obvious one: your hair doesn’t grow back or it grows very slowly.

Keep in mind hair naturally goes through a cycle. This cycle contains three stages, but only one contains “active” hair that actually grows.

The order of these stages is completely random, and different individuals experience longer or shorter growth phases. However, chances are if your hair isn’t growing like it normally does, you’re experiencing a sign of balding.

There are a number of ways to stimulate hair growth. If none work, it might be time to speak to a doctor about possibilities.

A New Approach

If you’re experiencing one of these four early signs of balding, it’s important you act now.

By 35, about 66% of men will experience some form of hair loss. For many, genetics and environmental conditions make it practically impossible to slow balding.

But there is another way to gain back your confidence.

Scalp Micropigmentation uses organic plant-based pigments to mimic the appearance of hair follicles. It’s simple, effective and non-invasive.
