FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation in Seal Beach is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that offers an effective solution to enhance the appearance of hair loss without surgery. Specialized pigments are used and detailed impressions are carefully applied to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles over the scalp. This approach is used to create an illusion of increased hair density while making the areas of thinning less visible. SMP can recreate the appearance of a short, shaved hairstyle, giving a realistic result for those with little or no hair. It is also often used along with hair transplant surgery to improve the look of fullness and create a more complete overall result.

How many treatments do I need?

Most clients achieve the desired result in just two Scalp Micropigmentation sessions. Treatments are several weeks apart to allow time for the scalp to heal and the pigment to settle in properly. Some pigment will naturally fade through the healing process so multiple appointments help to build a better consistency, improve definition and create a more natural finish. A third treatment session can be scheduled for additional density or refinement to further enhance the final appearance.

How long is each treatment?

The duration of each session depends on the amount of treatment but most sessions usually last between two and four hours. The initial visit is usually the longest as this is when the general design and placement of the pigment is determined. Subsequent sessions will focus on building up the density, refining the details and perfecting the final look, so treatment times can vary according to the complexity of each case.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Together with you, based on our professional experience and your ideas, we design the hairline. We will analyze your facial features and the natural growth pattern of your hair in conjunction with the hairstyle that you want, in order to design a hairline that looks right for your face. Each design is custom tailored to provide natural looking results unique to you and your goals, not a “one size fits all” approach.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

One reason Scalp Micropigmentation is such a popular hair restoration option is because it is permanent. Results vary from client to client but generally touch-ups appointments are recommended every five to eight years. When that happens is up to your skin, how much sun you're in, your everyday routine, and how your body holds onto pigment over time.

What are the aftercare instructions?

A few simple aftercare recommendations are vital for proper healing. For four days after your treatment, do not wash your scalp, exercise vigorously, touch the treated area or cut your hair. These precautions help protect the pigment and help the healing process. Each client also receives a comprehensive aftercare guide with detailed instructions and helpful recovery tips.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

The majority of our clients return to work and their normal activities the following day after their appointment. Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that requires little to no down time. Recovery is not great but still the most important step to have the best possible results is to follow the aftercare instructions.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

It’s perfectly normal for the treated area to appear darker immediately after your session than it will be once it’s healed. The pigment will slowly sink into the skin over the next few days, giving a softer, more natural look. Temporary redness is also common and usually subsides quickly. The pigmentation closely resembles the look of natural hair follicles after the healing process for realistic cosmetic results.

Does it hurt?

Most people are pleasantly surprised how comfortable the treatment is. Some sensitivity should be expected throughout the procedure but most clients find the experience to be less painful than getting a traditional tattoo. Our practitioners are trained to perform every treatment with precision and care to minimize discomfort and ensure you stay comfortable throughout your appointment.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

Whether or not you want to maintain a shaved hairstyle depends on your goals with treatment and how much hair you have to begin with. Clients with larger bald areas typically achieve the most realistic results with a closely cropped hairstyle. Scalp Micropigmentation creates the illusion of hair follicles, not new hair growth. Wearing untreated hair for too long can sometimes make the treated area more noticeable. If the procedure is to improve visual density, clients with thinning hair may have more flexibility to keep additional length.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Absolutely. In addition to addressing hair loss, Scalp Micropigmentation is frequently used to conceal scars on the scalp. Our specialists treat transplant scars, surgical scars, and scars from previous injuries by carefully blending pigment into the surrounding area to produce a more natural and even appearance.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Hair preparation plays an important role in the final appearance of your treatment. Clients receiving scar camouflage or density enhancement are typically advised to trim their hair to the shortest length they expect to maintain after the procedure. Those with more advanced hair loss often benefit from shaving the scalp before treatment to maximize realism.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

After completing your treatment, we provide individualized maintenance recommendations based on your lifestyle and cosmetic goals. These suggestions may include scalp care products, grooming techniques, and practical advice to help your Scalp Micropigmentation continue looking natural and well maintained.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

No. Routine shaving after the scalp has healed is completely safe and does not interfere with the pigment. Many clients continue shaving regularly while maintaining excellent cosmetic results for many years.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

Not at all. Shaving does not remove the pigment or reduce the effectiveness of your Scalp Micropigmentation. Since the pigment remains within the skin, it continues to provide the appearance of closely shaved hair follicles despite regular grooming.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

Every Scalp Micropigmentation procedure is tailored to the individual, so pricing is based on the details of your treatment plan. Important factors include the extent of hair loss, the size of the scalp that needs coverage, and the level of density necessary to produce realistic results. Most clients begin with two sessions scheduled about one week apart to allow the pigment to heal properly and establish the foundation of the treatment. A third session may be scheduled one to three months later if additional density or detail is desired. Scar camouflage treatments typically range from $800 to $1,000 per session. Treatments for Norwood levels 2 through 4 generally range from $2,400 to $3,400, while Norwood levels 5 through 7 typically cost between $3,400 and $4,200. Larger treatment plans, including extensive scalp enhancements and multiple-session procedures, generally range from $4,200 to $5,200. Your final price will reflect your individual treatment goals and the amount of work required.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Proper sun protection is essential for maintaining the appearance of your Scalp Micropigmentation. Although the pigment is designed to last for years, regular exposure to intense sunlight can gradually reduce its appearance. Applying sunscreen to the treated area and wearing a hat whenever you spend extended time outdoors can help preserve your results while supporting long-term pigment retention.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on the size of the treatment area and the complexity of the procedure. Most clients complete two treatment sessions and have the option of scheduling a third appointment if additional density or refinement is desired. Scar camouflage procedures generally range from $800 to $1,000 per session. Treatments for Norwood stages 2 through 4 usually range from $2,400 to $3,400, while Norwood stages 5 through 7 generally range from $3,400 to $4,200. More comprehensive treatment plans are typically priced between $4,200 and $5,200.

When are the payments due?

To reserve your appointments, a $400 deposit is required. Because treatment availability can be limited, scheduling ahead is encouraged. The remaining balance is generally split between your first and second treatment sessions. Financing options are available for clients seeking additional payment flexibility.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with Zang SMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

Thank u so much Walter and Ridd for your excellent customer service and I can't be any happier with the results. Walter is truly a master of his craft and he was able to hide my scar very well. I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
