FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation, or SMP, is a non-surgical, highly detailed technique in which plant-based pigments are applied to the upper layer of the scalp to mimic the appearance of individual hair follicles. This creates a natural, fuller-hair look and restores the visual density of thinning areas.

Torrance residents commonly choose SMP to achieve a crisp, buzzed hairstyle. It is also effective for improving the look of thinning areas or enhancing the results of previous hair transplant procedures by creating a realistic appearance of density.

How many treatments do I need?

Clients in Torrance should expect at least two sessions spaced about seven days apart. The first session may fade slightly as the scalp heals, making a second session essential for reinforcing pigment and detail. Some clients may benefit from a third touch-up session within one to three months for optimal results.

How long is each treatment?

SMP appointments generally last two to four hours. The first session takes the longest because it involves designing a personalized hairline and applying foundational pigment. Later sessions are shorter, focusing on reinforcement and detail refinement.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

In Torrance, hairline design is a collaborative process between you and your SMP technician. Your facial features, goals, and personal preferences are carefully considered to produce a natural, flattering, and tailored hairline.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

After completing three SMP sessions, clients can enjoy the results while following recommended aftercare guidelines. Torrance clients are covered by a one-year warranty that offers complimentary touch-ups if fading occurs. Most clients will not require additional treatments for several years.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

For the majority of Torrance clients, SMP touch-ups are generally not needed for five to eight years. While the treatment is designed for long-term results, sun exposure and skin aging can gradually reduce pigment intensity over time.

What are the aftercare instructions?

After SMP, follow all aftercare steps closely. Avoid water contact, limit sweat-inducing activities, and skip haircuts for four days. Hats and normal sleep positions are allowed. A detailed PDF guide is provided for complete aftercare instructions.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

Correct. SMP is non-invasive and does not require downtime. Most Torrance clients return to work or normal activities immediately or shortly after the session. Adhering to aftercare ensures proper healing and the best long-term results.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Immediately after treatment, pigment may appear darker and mild redness may occur. These effects usually fade within two to three days. Once healed, the pigment mimics natural hair follicles and is difficult to detect.

Does it hurt?

Most clients find SMP far less painful than traditional tattoos. Our team prioritizes comfort and ensures that every session is smooth, easy, and stress-free.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

At your consultation, we will assess your scalp and discuss your goals to create a plan that fits your daily routine. Torrance clients with Norwood 6–7 hair loss typically need to maintain a clean-shaven appearance since SMP does not grow with hair and surrounding hair could appear inconsistent.

Clients opting for density enhancement can have pigment layered into existing hair, which is ideal for thinning in the crown or front, allowing them to maintain some hair length while improving overall fullness.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes, SMP effectively conceals scars from past FUE or FUT hair transplants and other types of trauma. Torrance clients often report a noticeable improvement in confidence after pigment is carefully applied to create a smoother and more uniform scalp surface.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

If SMP is being done for density or scar camouflage, hair should be at normal length. Clients classified as Norwood 6–7 should shave prior to treatment and maintain this shaved style afterward for consistent results.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

During your consultation, we provide full guidance for maintaining SMP results. Torrance clients receive tailored aftercare instructions to maximize longevity, and a complimentary consultation can provide a detailed maintenance plan specific to your needs.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

Shaving the head does not interfere with SMP. It is a normal part of scalp grooming, and we provide guidance on appropriate shaving tools and scalp-care products. Torrance clients can also consult our product guide to help maintain optimal results.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

No, daily shaving does not disturb SMP. Since pigments are deposited in the upper layers of the skin, grooming and cleansing do not affect results. Many Torrance clients maintain a shaved style without fading or irritation.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

Pricing depends on the areas treated and the client’s needs. Most clients undergo two sessions spaced a week apart, with an optional third session. Scar concealment is $800–$1,000 per session. Norwood 2–4 treatments are $2,400–$3,400, stages 5–7 are $3,400–$4,200, and full procedures including scars range $4,200–$5,200.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Clients should protect SMP from sun exposure to maintain pigment vibrancy. Hats or high-quality sunscreen are recommended. Torrance residents outdoors frequently should take extra precautions to prevent fading caused by UV exposure.

How much does it cost?

Costs depend on the treatment area and whether scars are addressed. Scar treatments are $800–$1,000 per session. General thinning or bald areas cost $2,400–$3,400 for Norwood 2–4, $3,400–$4,200 for stages 5–7, and full procedures including scars generally cost $4,200–$5,200.

When are the payments due?

A $400 deposit secures the appointment. Sessions typically have an eight-week lead time, and the remaining balance is split between the first two sessions. Flexible financing is available for Torrance clients.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

Thank u so much Walter and Ridd for your excellent customer service and I can't be any happier with the results. Walter is truly a master of his craft and he was able to hide my scar very well. I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
