FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation in San Fernando Valley is a new non-surgical hair loss restoration treatment that aims to improve the appearance of hair loss with natural-looking cosmetic results. During treatment, special pigments are carefully applied to the scalp to resemble closely shaved hair follicles. This technique helps to reduce the appearance of thinning areas and creates the illusion of increased density and fullness. For those who are suffering from advanced hair loss, the procedure can create the look of a freshly shaved scalp, and is often performed in conjunction with hair transplants to improve the appearance of overall coverage and to blend existing hair more naturally.

How many treatments do I need?

Most clients have their Scalp Micropigmentation treatment in 2 appointments. These sessions are spaced out on purpose to give time for the scalp to recover and also to see how the pigment heals in the skin. Some pigment may soften or fade during the healing process, so additional sessions are important to build consistency and achieve natural-looking results. Depending on your desired level of coverage and density, a third treatment may be recommended to complete the final look.

How long is each treatment?

Treatment times vary depending on each individual’s goals and the amount of scalp being treated, although most appointments are between two and four hours. The initial session is usually the longest, as it lays down the pattern and structure of the procedure. Other appointments are for building up density, improving detail and making refinements which can increase or decrease the overall treatment time depending on the work involved.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

This is a collaborative effort between you and your practitioner to design the hairline. We assess your facial proportions, existing hair pattern, age and personal preferences carefully before developing a hairline that looks balanced and natural. Our goal is to deliver a result that blends seamlessly with your overall appearance and fulfils your expectations for a realistic and enduring outcome.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

Many clients are pleased with the long-lasting cosmetic results of Scalp Micropigmentation. Everyone heals differently but maintenance appointments are often recommended every 5 to 8 years. The length of time the pigment lasts depends on a number of factors including skin type, sun exposure, lifestyle and skincare habits.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Recovery is easy but it’s very important to follow the recommended after care instructions. Avoid washing your scalp, vigorous exercise, touching the treated area or having a haircut for the first four days after treatment. These instructions help to encourage the correct healing process and improve pigment retention. All clients are also given detailed aftercare instructions to help ensure the best possible outcome.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

Most people are able to return to work or their normal daily activities the day after their appointment. There is very little downtime involved as Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure. However, it’s still important to follow the aftercare recommendations carefully so you get excellent healing and lasting results.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Immediately after the procedure the pigmentation will appear darker than the final healed result. Your scalp will heal over the next few days and the color will soften and blend more naturally with your skin tone. You may also notice some mild redness in the early healing stage but that usually disappears in a few days. The end result mimics natural hair follicles closely for a realistic appearance when the healing process is done.

Does it hurt?

The majority of clients report that the procedure is much more comfortable than they had anticipated prior to treatment. You may feel some tenderness in areas of your scalp, but it usually won’t be as painful as getting a regular tattoo. Our practitioners employ precise techniques and a gentle touch during the procedure to help ensure your comfort from beginning to end.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

Your post treatment hairstyle choice will depend on your individual hair loss pattern and goals of your Scalp Micropigmentation procedure. Clients with very little hair often get the best look for SMP by keeping a close-cut style, because SMP is not designed to grow hair, but to look like hair follicles. The contrast may be more apparent if the surrounding hair is significantly longer than the treated area. Moderate thinning clients may be able to keep more length if the treatment is designed to give the illusion of more density.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes. Scalp Micropigmentation is an excellent solution for minimizing the appearance of a range of scalp scars. Our practitioners routinely camouflage hair transplant scars, surgical scars, and injury scars with careful pigment placement that blends with the surrounding scalp to create a smoother, more consistent look.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Preparing your hair before treatment is an important step in achieving realistic results. Clients seeking density enhancement or scar camouflage are generally encouraged to trim their hair to the shortest style they plan to maintain after treatment. Individuals with more advanced hair loss typically achieve the most natural cosmetic outcome by shaving the scalp before their appointment.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

Our team will provide personalized recommendations to help preserve your Scalp Micropigmentation for years to come. Depending on your needs, this may include advice on scalp care products, grooming routines, and daily habits that help maintain the appearance and longevity of your treatment.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

No. After the scalp has fully healed, regular shaving will not damage the pigment or interfere with your results. Many of our clients shave their heads frequently and continue to enjoy a natural-looking appearance over the long term.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

No. Shaving your head on a routine basis will not remove the pigment or reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Because the pigment is implanted beneath the surface of the skin, it continues to create the appearance of natural hair follicles regardless of how often you shave.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

The price of Scalp Micropigmentation is determined on an individual basis because every treatment plan is customized to the client's needs. Factors such as the severity of hair loss, the size of the treatment area, and the amount of density needed to achieve a natural appearance all influence the overall cost. Most clients begin with two treatment sessions scheduled approximately one week apart, allowing the pigment to settle while creating a realistic foundation. A third appointment may be recommended one to three months later to enhance density or refine the final appearance. Scar camouflage treatments generally range from $800 to $1,000 per session. Clients with Norwood levels 2 through 4 typically invest between $2,400 and $3,400, while Norwood levels 5 through 7 generally range from $3,400 to $4,200. Extensive treatment plans involving larger scalp areas, scar camouflage, or multiple sessions usually range from $4,200 to $5,200. Your final quote will be based on your individual treatment plan and desired outcome.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

One of the best ways to preserve your Scalp Micropigmentation is by limiting prolonged exposure to the sun. Although SMP is designed to provide long-lasting cosmetic results, excessive ultraviolet exposure can gradually fade the pigment. Applying sunscreen whenever your scalp is exposed and wearing a hat during extended outdoor activities can help maintain the appearance of your treatment while supporting long-term pigment retention.

How much does it cost?

Treatment costs vary according to the amount of scalp requiring pigmentation and the complexity of the procedure. Most clients begin with two sessions, with the option of scheduling a third appointment to further improve density and enhance the final result. Scar camouflage treatments generally cost between $800 and $1,000 per session. Hair loss categorized as Norwood levels 2 through 4 typically ranges from $2,400 to $3,400, while Norwood levels 5 through 7 generally range from $3,400 to $4,200. More extensive treatment plans usually fall between $4,200 and $5,200.

When are the payments due?

A $400 deposit is required to reserve your treatment appointments. Since availability is limited, appointments are often scheduled in advance. The remaining balance is generally divided between your first and second treatment sessions. Financing options are available to help make treatment more accessible.

How do I get started?

Beginning your treatment is simple. Contact us by calling 310-425-4975 or emailing info@zangsmp.com to schedule your consultation. Clients who live outside the local area are welcome to submit photographs of their scalp for evaluation. We also offer remote consultations where you can discuss treatment recommendations, pricing, scheduling, and expected results from the comfort of your home.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with Zang SMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

Thank u so much Walter and Ridd for your excellent customer service and I can't be any happier with the results. Walter is truly a master of his craft and he was able to hide my scar very well. I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
