FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation in Brea is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that has become a popular choice for people looking to improve the appearance of thinning hair or baldness. The process consists of injecting special pigments into the scalp with incredible accuracy to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles. This technique helps disguise thin areas, creating the illusion of a greater density of hair and a fuller head of hair. For clients with more advanced hair loss, SMP can mimic the look of a freshly shaved scalp to give realistic and natural results. It is also frequently used in conjunction with hair transplant procedures to improve the overall appearance of coverage and give a more complete look.

How many treatments do I need?

The majority of clients have their Scalp Micropigmentation treatment completed in two sessions. Appointments are spaced to allow the scalp time to heal while giving the pigment a chance to settle naturally into the skin. Some pigment may fade during the healing process and several treatments may help create consistency, better definition and a more natural look. If you wish to have a higher density of hair, you may be advised to have a second session to add to the end result, depending on your hair restoration goals and how thick you would like your hair to be.

How long is each treatment?

The duration of each appointment will vary according to the area being treated and the extent of the work required, although most sessions tend to last between two and four hours. The first appointment usually takes the longest time as it sets the foundation of the treatment. Follow-up visits aim at adding more pigment, improving the overall look, and increasing density, so the time spent can vary depending on the complexity of each individual case.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Your hairline design is developed through a collaborative process that incorporates our professional expertise and your personal preferences. Considering your facial shape and existing hair pattern, as well as the look you want, we recommend a hairline that looks natural and balanced. Our goal is to get you a result that is tailored to your unique features and reflects your ideal vision of what a natural result should be.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

One of the reasons so many clients opt for Scalp Micropigmentation is its longevity. Everyone is different, but generally, maintenance visits are recommended every five to eight years. The exact timing will depend on a variety of factors including your skin type, daily lifestyle, sun exposure, and how well your scalp holds onto pigment over time. If needed, a touch-up can be performed to refresh the look of the treatment to keep it looking fresh.

What are the aftercare instructions?

The procedure is easy to follow, but the best possible results are important. Avoid washing your scalp, strenuous physical activities, touching the treated area and cutting your hair for the first four days. These recommendations assist with proper healing and pigment retention. We also give each of our clients a detailed aftercare guide, including full instructions and extra tips for the period of recovery.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

SMP is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure so generally there is no down time where you would need to take time off of work. Most patients leave their appointments and go back to their normal activities the next day. The recommended aftercare is four days and following these guidelines will help to maximize healing and contribute to long-lasting natural-looking results.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Often the pigment will be darker immediately after treatment than the final healed result. This is very normal, and will clear up as the scalp heals over the next few days. Mild redness is also common during the first stage of healing, but typically fades quickly. The pigment settles, the skin heals and the treatment takes on a natural and realistic look that mimics natural hair follicles.

Does it hurt?

The procedure is surprisingly comfortable for most clients. Scalp Micropigmentation is generally regarded as a far more comfortable procedure than a conventional tattoo although there might be some mild sensitivity during the treatment. During the procedure our practitioners use accurate techniques and a gentle approach to help reduce discomfort and assist clients to remain as comfortable as possible.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

If you want to maintain a shaved hairstyle, it depends on your individual treatment goals and how much hair you have. For clients with large areas of hair loss across the top of the scalp a very close shave of the hair is often best. Scalp Micropigmentation is not intended to promote hair growth; it is designed to mimic the appearance of hair follicles. If the hair around the treated area is left much longer, the length difference could be more noticeable. For clients with moderate thinning, the treatment can give the illusion of added density, allowing them to wear their hair a little longer.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes. Scalp Micropigmentation is also an excellent solution for treating both scalp scars and hair loss. We are experienced in scar camouflage for hair transplant scars, scars from surgery and scars from injuries. We use a special technique to carefully match the pigment to the surrounding scalp which creates a more even and natural look.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

For the best outcome, it is advisable to properly prepare your hair before the treatment. For patients seeking density enhancement or scar camouflage, the usual advice is to cut the hair to the shortest length they want to wear after the procedure. In clients with more hair loss, shaving the scalp prior to the procedure generally produces the most natural-looking result.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

Our team will provide you with tailored recommendations to sustain your results once your treatment is over. Such recommendations may include products for scalp maintenance, grooming practices and maintenance tips that can help to keep your Scalp Micropigmentation looking fresh and natural for years to come.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

No. Once your scalp has fully healed, shaving your head in your normal grooming routine will not affect the pigment. Many of our clients still shave regularly but enjoy natural looking and consistent results over time.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

No. Shaving your head will not affect the quality of your Scalp Micropigmentation or wash out the pigment. The pigment is deposited under the surface of the skin so it won’t go anywhere and continues to simulate the appearance of closely shaved hair follicles.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

The cost of Scalp Micropigmentation is different for every person as each treatment plan is designed for the individual. The price depends on several factors, including the extent of hair loss, the size of the area being treated and the level of density required for a natural look. Most clients have two treatment sessions spaced roughly 1 week apart. This allows the pigment to settle properly while creating a realistic foundation. A third session may be recommended 1-3 months later to add more detail or increase density, depending on your goals. The cost of scar camouflage treatment is usually between $800 and $1,000 per session. Average Norwood treatments levels 2 to 4 generally cost $2,400-$3,400. More extensive hair loss (Norwood levels 5-7) is generally $3,400 – $4,200. Comprehensive treatment plans with extensive scalp enhancements, scar camouflage or multiple treatment sessions typically range from $4,200 to $5,200. Your final quote will be customized to your needs and the results you want to achieve.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

To help maintain the appearance of your Scalp Micropigmentation over time, avoid overexposure to the sun. Although SMP is engineered to last, repeated exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can slowly cause fading of the pigment. Whenever you know you will be out in the sun for long periods of time, wear a hat and use sunscreen on a regular basis; both will help to maintain the appearance of your treatment and assist in long-term pigment retention.

How much does it cost?

The cost of treatment is dependent on the complexity of your case and the size of the scalp requiring pigmentation. Typically, clients start with two treatments and can opt for a third session to boost density or achieve the perfect finish. The cost of a scar camouflage procedure is usually between $800 and $1,000 per session. Norwood hair loss levels 2-4 are typically treated for between $2,400 and $3,400 and Norwood levels 5-7 are typically treated for between $3,400 and $4,200. The cost of more comprehensive treatment plans usually ranges from $4,200 to $5,200.

When are the payments due?

A deposit of $400 is needed to reserve your treatment appointments. Appointments are limited and you may need to give advance notice to schedule an appointment. The balance is usually divided between your first and second treatment sessions. There are also financing options that can make treatment more manageable and affordable.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with Zang SMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
