Frequently Asked Questions

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation, also known as SMP, is a non-surgical procedure that uses detailed micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. This creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles that help thicken and restore the look of fuller hair. Often referred to as a hair tattoo, this method can dramatically enhance the appearance of the scalp by replicating the natural look of real hair.

Who is a candidate for SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation is suitable for both men and women experiencing various stages of hair loss or thinning. It is particularly effective for those suffering from patterns of baldness such as male and female pattern baldness or thinning hair. SMP can also be beneficial for people who have scars from hair transplantation or other surgeries.

How does the SMP procedure work?

The SMP procedure involves applying a specialized pigment to the scalp with micro-fine needles to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles, providing your hair with a shaved/buzzed appearance. This process requires several sessions to achieve the most natural and realistic results, each session building on the density and shade of the scalp’s appearance.

What are the aftercare instructions for SMP?

After your SMP treatment, it’s important to follow specific aftercare instructions to ensure the longevity of the treatment results. These include keeping the scalp dry and free from heavy sweating for a few days, avoiding direct sunlight, and not touching or scratching the treated area. Detailed guidance will be provided by your SMP specialist.

How does SMP protect against sunlight?

Sunlight can fade the pigments used in SMP, so it’s important to protect the treated area from excessive sun exposure. Wearing a hat or applying a high-SPF sunscreen to the scalp can help maintain the color integrity and detail of your SMP treatment.

Can SMP work alongside existing hair?

Yes, SMP is designed to blend seamlessly with your existing hair. It can be used to fill in areas of thinning hair or to create a more uniform density across the scalp. This makes it an excellent solution for those looking to enhance their existing hair without undergoing more invasive hair rejuvenation treatments.

What makes SMP different from hair transplantation?

Unlike hair transplantation, which involves the surgical removal and placement of actual hair follicles, SMP simply creates the illusion of hair. There’s no real hair moved during the procedure, making it a non-invasive alternative with minimal recovery time. SMP can also be used to camouflage scars from previous hair transplants.

Is SMP a permanent solution?

Scalp Micropigmentation is considered semi-permanent. While the results can last for many years, they might gradually fade over time. A touch-up session may be necessary every few years to maintain the sharpness and density of the pigment.

Can SMP be considered as part of hair rejuvenation treatments?

Absolutely! SMP is often integrated into broader hair rejuvenation strategies. It works well in conjunction with other treatments aimed at maintaining or regrowing existing hair, providing a thicker and fuller appearance while other treatments take effect.

How much does it cost?

The cost for SMP is case by case, depending on the scale of hair loss and the amount of work needed. The first two treatments are one week apart with a possibility of a third treatment 1-3 months after the second. For scar concealments, it is $800-$1000 per treatment.

For class 2-4 hair loss it is $2400-$3400. Class 5-7 hair loss is $3400-$4200. Top of the scalp with scar concealment ranges from $4200-$5200 for 2-3 treatments.

When are the payments due?

There is a $400 booking deposit to secure your treatment dates with us. There is a typical wait time of 8 weeks for an appointment. We then split the payments 50/50 between the first two treatments. We do offer financing as well.
