FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation, commonly known as SMP, is an advanced, non-surgical technique that involves carefully implanting organic, plant-based pigments into the upper layer of the scalp. This precise process recreates the look of individual hair follicles, giving the impression of thicker, fuller hair.

In Yorba Linda, SMP is a preferred choice for individuals seeking a clean, buzzed appearance due to hair loss. It is equally effective for enhancing thinning areas or correcting inconsistent results from previous hair transplant procedures by adding realistic visual density.

How many treatments do I need?

Yorba Linda clients should expect at least two sessions spaced roughly one week apart. The initial treatment may appear slightly lighter as the scalp heals, which is why a follow-up session is necessary to strengthen pigment and define details. Occasionally, a third touch-up session may be recommended within one to three months to achieve the most polished results.

How long is each treatment?

SMP appointments generally take between two and four hours. The first session is usually the longest because it involves constructing a personalized hairline and applying foundational pigment. Later appointments are typically shorter, focusing on refining the pigment and adjusting for the way your scalp absorbs it.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

In Yorba Linda, designing the hairline is a collaborative process between you and your technician. Your personal preferences, facial features, and desired look are all considered to create a hairline that is natural, flattering, and tailored specifically to you.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

After completing three SMP sessions, clients can enjoy the results with confidence. Following the recommended aftercare routine is important. Yorba Linda clients are protected by our one-year warranty, which covers any fading that may occur, providing complimentary touch-ups. Most people will not require additional treatment for several years.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

For most Yorba Linda clients, SMP touch-ups are not needed for five to eight years after the initial sessions. Although the procedure is designed to last, exposure to sunlight and the natural aging of the scalp can cause pigments to gradually fade over time.

What are the aftercare instructions?

After your SMP procedure, it is essential to follow aftercare guidelines. For the first four days, avoid wetting the treated area, limit activities that cause sweating, and refrain from cutting your hair. Hats are allowed immediately, and sleeping is unrestricted. A detailed aftercare PDF is provided to guide you step by step.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

Correct. SMP is non-invasive and requires no downtime. Most Yorba Linda clients return to their regular daily activities or work the same day or shortly after the procedure. Following the aftercare instructions ensures proper healing and the best possible results.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Immediately following the treatment, the pigment may appear darker than expected and slight redness may occur. These are temporary and usually subside within two to three days. After healing, the pigment softens to a natural tone that closely resembles real hair follicles.

Does it hurt?

SMP is generally less painful than traditional tattooing. Our team takes all measures to make your experience comfortable and ensures that each session is smooth and stress-free from start to finish.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

During your consultation, our specialists will thoroughly evaluate your scalp and discuss your personal goals to develop a treatment plan tailored to your lifestyle. If you are in Yorba Linda and fall into the Norwood 6 or 7 range, maintaining a clean-shaven appearance is typically recommended, because SMP does not grow with hair and any surrounding hair growth could appear uneven.

For clients seeking density enhancement, pigment can be layered into existing hair to provide a fuller look. This approach is ideal for thinning areas in the crown or frontal regions, allowing clients to maintain their natural hair while achieving more visual density.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes, SMP is highly effective for minimizing the appearance of scars caused by previous FUE or FUT hair transplant procedures, as well as scars from other types of trauma. Yorba Linda clients have reported noticeable improvements in self-confidence after pigment is carefully applied to scarred areas, producing a smooth and uniform appearance.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

If SMP is intended for density enhancement or scar concealment, clients should arrive with their hair at the usual length. However, if your hair loss falls into the Norwood 6–7 classification, we recommend shaving the head before the session and maintaining that shaved style afterward to ensure natural, consistent results.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

Our specialists review all steps necessary to maintain SMP results during the consultation. For Yorba Linda clients, we provide personalized aftercare instructions designed to extend the life of your SMP. You can also schedule a complimentary consultation to create a maintenance plan that is specific to your treatment.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

There is no reason for concern. Shaving your head does not affect SMP pigments. It is a routine part of grooming, and we provide guidance on suitable shaving tools and scalp-care products to maintain the treatment. Yorba Linda clients can also refer to our product guide for advice on keeping their results fresh.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

No, regular shaving will not disturb SMP. Since pigment is deposited into the upper layers of the skin, routine grooming and cleansing are safe. Many Yorba Linda clients maintain a shaved look post-SMP without experiencing fading or irritation.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

Pricing is determined by the treatment zones and individual client needs. Most clients complete two sessions spaced a week apart, with an optional third session within one to three months. Scar concealment generally costs between $800 and $1,000 per session. Treatments for Norwood 2–4 typically range from $2,400 to $3,400, while stages 5–7 usually cost $3,400 to $4,200. Comprehensive procedures that include scar work are generally between $4,200 and $5,200.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Protecting your SMP from sun exposure is essential to maintain the pigment’s vibrancy. We recommend wearing hats or applying high-quality sunscreen when outdoors. Yorba Linda clients who enjoy outdoor activities should take extra care with UV protection to prevent premature fading.

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on the size of the treatment area and whether scar concealment is required. Scar treatments range from $800 to $1,000 per session. For general thinning or bald areas, Norwood 2–4 stages are usually $2,400 to $3,400, and stages 5–7 generally cost $3,400 to $4,200. Full procedures combining SMP and scar correction typically fall between $4,200 and $5,200.

When are the payments due?

A $400 deposit is required to secure your booking. Appointments typically have an eight-week lead time. The remaining balance is divided between the first two sessions. Flexible financing options are also available for Yorba Linda clients to make payment easier.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
