FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?

Scalp micropigmentation in Van Nuys is a modern and highly detailed cosmetic procedure that restores the appearance of hair without the need for surgery or invasive treatments. By implanting plant-based pigments into the scalp with expert precision, practitioners are able to recreate the appearance of authentic hair follicles and natural hair density. This treatment can be customized for a wide variety of hair loss situations, from complete baldness to thinning crowns and receding hairlines. Fully bald clients can achieve a realistic shaved look with subtle stubble definition, while individuals with sparse hair can add the appearance of fullness and depth. For those unhappy with the coverage from a previous hair transplant, scalp micropigmentation in Van Nuys offers a dependable and long-lasting enhancement that creates a younger and healthier overall look.

How many treatments do I need?

Most scalp micropigmentation procedures require a minimum of two separate appointments in order to achieve the most natural and long-lasting outcome possible. These sessions are commonly spaced about a week apart so the scalp can properly recover and the practitioner can evaluate how the skin responds to the pigment after healing. Since a portion of the pigment may fade slightly during the initial healing process, additional layering is necessary to improve consistency, depth, and realism. Clients often notice a major cosmetic improvement after their first session because the treatment immediately begins recreating the appearance of hair follicles and density. Even so, the second session plays a critical role in strengthening the finished appearance and adding the detail needed for a more complete result. In certain situations, a third appointment may be scheduled several weeks or months later for further refinement.

How long is each treatment?

The average scalp micropigmentation treatment session takes between two and four hours, although treatment times can differ depending on the size of the scalp area being addressed and the amount of detail involved. Initial appointments usually require the greatest amount of time because they involve creating the hairline shape, planning the overall density pattern, and laying down the first pass of pigment. Subsequent sessions are often somewhat shorter because they are focused on reinforcing areas, deepening the density, and perfecting the final appearance. Factors such as skin type, pigment retention, and the complexity of the desired look can all influence the overall appointment length.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Hairline design is never approached with a one-size-fits-all method because every individual has unique facial features, bone structure, and aesthetic goals. During the consultation and planning process, the practitioner carefully evaluates the shape of your head, your facial balance, and the way a natural hairline would realistically frame your appearance. Your own preferences are also considered throughout the process so the final result reflects both realism and personal style. Some people request a subtle and mature hairline, while others prefer a sharper and more youthful look. By combining professional guidance with your input, the final design becomes a realistic and personalized representation that suits your features naturally.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

Once your scalp micropigmentation sessions have been completed and the scalp has gone through the proper healing phase, you can begin fully enjoying the finished results of your treatment. We stand behind our work with a one year guarantee that covers fading during the first year after the procedure. If touch up work becomes necessary during that period, those adjustments are completed without any additional charges. Beyond that timeframe, most clients only need infrequent maintenance every few years to maintain the crisp appearance and overall realism of their SMP.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

In most situations, clients schedule maintenance sessions approximately five to eight years after the original procedure. Although scalp micropigmentation is intended to provide long-term results, natural skin regeneration and everyday environmental exposure can slowly soften the appearance of the pigment. Maintenance appointments help refresh the scalp, reinforce definition, and maintain a natural-looking appearance over time.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Aftercare is an important part of the scalp micropigmentation process because proper healing helps protect the integrity of the pigment. During the first four days after treatment, clients should avoid washing the scalp, exercising, cutting their hair, or touching the treated area unnecessarily. These restrictions are temporary but important for achieving the best outcome possible. Wearing a hat is allowed immediately after treatment, and sleeping positions will not negatively affect the pigment. Clients are also provided with a detailed aftercare PDF that outlines each step of the recovery process clearly.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

Since scalp micropigmentation does not involve surgery or invasive procedures, clients generally experience no downtime after treatment. Most people return home immediately after their session and are comfortable returning to work as early as the following day. By carefully following the aftercare instructions during the first few days, clients can support smooth healing and long-lasting results without significantly interrupting their daily routine.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Immediately after treatment, the scalp may appear slightly darker or more defined because the pigment is still fresh and has not yet settled into the skin completely. Over the next day or two, clients usually notice the color becoming softer, more natural, and more evenly blended throughout the scalp. Mild redness can also occur temporarily following the procedure, although this typically subsides within forty eight to seventy two hours depending on the individual’s skin type and sensitivity. Once the healing process progresses and the scalp adjusts, the final appearance becomes highly realistic and difficult to distinguish from the look of natural hair follicles.

Does it hurt?

Scalp micropigmentation is generally considered a low discomfort procedure, with many clients explaining that it feels significantly milder than a standard tattoo experience. Individual sensitivity levels vary, but most people tolerate the treatment very well from beginning to end. Our practitioners focus heavily on client comfort by using gentle techniques and carefully controlled application methods that help minimize irritation during each session. Any discomfort that does occur is usually described as light and very manageable.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

The answer depends largely on your current stage of hair loss and the type of result being created through scalp micropigmentation. During the consultation process, we study your hair pattern, remaining density, and scalp structure to determine the most realistic treatment approach for your situation. Clients with more advanced hair loss, especially Norwood 6 or 7 patterns, often achieve the most natural results by keeping the scalp closely shaved because SMP on the top of the head can appear disconnected from longer surrounding hair growth. Since scalp micropigmentation creates the illusion of follicles rather than producing real hair growth, maintaining a shorter hairstyle usually helps preserve realism. Clients with existing density often benefit from filler treatments that blend naturally with their current hair.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes, scalp micropigmentation is very effective for minimizing the visibility of scars while also enhancing the appearance of hair density. We regularly perform scar camouflage treatments for FUT and FUE transplant scars, as well as scars caused by surgeries or injuries. Through detailed pigment application and blending techniques, we create a more uniform scalp appearance that helps the scar tissue become far less noticeable. The objective is to produce a natural transition between the scar and surrounding scalp areas.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Clients undergoing filler treatments or scar correction sessions are generally advised to trim their hair to the shortest style they intend to maintain consistently. Doing so allows us to create the most accurate and realistic blend possible. Clients with advanced Norwood 6 or 7 hair loss must shave the scalp completely before treatment because SMP replicates the appearance of closely shaved follicles. Keeping the scalp shaved afterward helps maintain realism and visual consistency.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

Throughout your SMP experience, our specialists provide personalized maintenance guidance and product recommendations based on your scalp condition and lifestyle. These suggestions are intended to support long-term pigment quality and help maintain the clean appearance of the treatment. More detailed maintenance information and free consultation access can be found on our maintenance and product recommendation page.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

You should not be concerned about continuing to shave your scalp after treatment. SMP is specifically designed to remain intact during regular grooming and shaving routines. We also recommend products that can help maintain the overall condition and appearance of the scalp so your treatment continues looking natural and fresh over time.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

No, frequent shaving and washing will not negatively impact the pigmentation. The SMP impressions are implanted securely within the skin and are designed to remain stable despite daily grooming habits. Many clients shave regularly and continue enjoying long-lasting SMP results without any problems.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

Scalp micropigmentation pricing is determined according to each client’s unique level of hair loss, the amount of scalp coverage required, and the density necessary to achieve a natural-looking finish. Most treatment plans consist of two primary sessions completed about one week apart, although many clients also benefit from a third enhancement session performed one to three months later for additional refinement and artistic detail. Scar camouflage sessions commonly cost between 800 and 1,000 dollars depending on the size and complexity of the scar. Hair loss cases classified within categories 2 through 4 typically range from 2,400 to 3,400 dollars, while more extensive Norwood 5 through 7 cases usually fall between 3,400 and 4,200 dollars. Comprehensive treatment plans involving multiple sessions, scar correction, and advanced top-of-scalp coverage generally total between 4,200 and 5,200 dollars. Every treatment quote is personalized based on your scalp condition and restoration goals.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Sun exposure can gradually fade scalp micropigmentation pigments over time, especially when the scalp is exposed frequently without protection. To maintain the sharpness and longevity of your SMP, it is recommended to use a high-quality sunscreen with broad-spectrum UV protection whenever your scalp will be exposed outdoors. Wearing a hat during prolonged periods in direct sunlight also provides excellent protection. Incorporating these habits into your daily routine can help preserve pigment definition and keep your SMP looking natural and vibrant for many years.

How much does it cost?

The cost of scalp micropigmentation varies because each treatment plan is tailored to the client’s degree of hair loss, scalp size, and desired density level. Most clients begin with two sessions scheduled roughly one week apart, while some return later for a third touch-up appointment to refine the overall result. Scar camouflage treatments generally range from 800 to 1,000 dollars per session. Clients experiencing moderate hair loss within categories 2 through 4 often invest between 2,400 and 3,400 dollars, while more advanced cases in categories 5 through 7 commonly range from 3,400 to 4,200 dollars. More extensive plans involving multiple sessions and scar blending frequently total between 4,200 and 5,200 dollars.

When are the payments due?

A booking deposit of 400 dollars is generally required in order to reserve your treatment appointments, and availability often includes a waiting period of approximately eight weeks. The remaining balance is commonly divided across the first two treatment sessions to simplify the payment process. Flexible financing solutions are also available for clients who prefer monthly payment arrangements rather than paying the entire amount upfront.

How do I get started?

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
