FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation in Sherman Oaks blends technical precision with artistic skill to create the appearance of natural hair growth. Organic pigments can be inserted into the scalp to mimic the appearance of tiny hair follicles, helping to reduce the appearance of baldness and thinning hair. The treatment can be tailored to suit different levels of hair loss, from slight thinning to complete baldness. SMP is also a great long term solution for clients who want a realistic shaved head look or want to create density around existing hair. It’s a great solution for those looking to boost their confidence and overall appearance.

How many treatments do I need?

For the best result, most SMP procedures will require 2 or more sessions. In the time between appointments the scalp is given time to heal and the practitioner can assess the retention of pigment before moving on. The initial session creates a noticeable improvement but subsequent treatments help increase density, enhance realism and ensure long term consistency. Some people may need a third session to get the final look just right.

How long is each treatment?

Most appointments are between two and four hours. The duration of the treatment depends on several factors: the size of the treated area, the complexity of the hairline design and the desired density. First sessions are long and later sessions are more about refinement and enhancement.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

A hairline is a complicated creation that involves a lot of planning and communication. Our practitioners lead the design process with facial balance, head shape, natural aesthetics and your personal preferences in mind. We work together to create a believable result to improve your overall look.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

You can enjoy your SMP results immediately once your sessions and aftercare instructions are complete. One Year Guarantee – we will cover any touch-up work needed during this period for the unexpected fading. Maintenance is not often needed, and often not until several years have passed.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

For many people SMP still looks great for quite a long time before any maintenance is needed. Touch up treatments are typically performed five to eight years after the original procedure. Over time the skin changes and natural fading can occur slowly . Occasional maintenance can be beneficial to keep the overall appearance.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Aftercare is key to the final outcome, and following it properly can make a meaningful difference. Clients should not wash their scalp for the first four days after treatment, exercise, touch the treated area, or get a haircut. By doing these simple steps, you will help protect your pigment in the early healing stage. Detailed written instructions are available for your reference.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

Right. Most patients can resume their normal activities shortly after treatment. There’s no surgical recovery, so it’s common to return to work the following day. Following the aftercare instructions helps in supporting the best results.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Most clients are shocked at how the pigment is visible immediately after the first session. This is part of the healing process and is perfectly normal to have this initial boldness. Over the next several days the pigment settles, and the appearance becomes softer and more balanced. Some redness may appear following treatment but is generally mild and transient, often resolving within 48-72 hours. The treated area will look far more natural and will blend in with the surrounding skin as the scalp heals.

Does it hurt?

The level of discomfort associated with SMP is generally low. No two clients experience the procedure exactly the same way, but many describe the sensation as a mild scratching rather than significant pain. Our team’s number one priority is the comfort of our patient in every one of our sessions. Our sophisticated application techniques ensure a positive treatment experience.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

How long should my hair be? It depends on the type of SMP treatment you are having. They usually get the best result when they are short and shaved, especially if they have advanced stages of hair loss. This allows the pigment impressions to be integrated naturally with the rest of the hair. If you are a client not seeking full coverage of the scalp but rather more density, then there may be more options, particularly if there is enough natural hair to allow the treatment to blend in well.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes. SMP can be very effective in improving the appearance of scalp scars. Regardless of the cause of the scar, be it surgery, hair transplant or injury, the careful placement of pigment can assist in creating a more even visual effect throughout the scalp. Each treatment is customized to the characteristics of the individual scar.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Often, clients are asked to prepare their hair for the particular treatment being done to ensure the most accurate results. Hair density and scalp scar camouflage procedures generally require shorter hair but in severe hair loss cases a complete shave of the scalp tends to work best prior to commencing treatment.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

Recommendations for each client are specific to their needs. Proper scalp care, healthy grooming habits, and the use of the proper products can help maintain the appearance of SMP. During your consultation we discuss maintenance strategies tailored to your individual circumstances.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

No. If you are still shaving your head then it’s safe to continue and will not affect your SMP. The treatment is made to withstand normal grooming and daily maintenance.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

The pigment will not be affected by daily shaving. Because the impressions are made below the skin surface, they won’t fade or disappear prematurely with normal hair removal and cleaning.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

The cost of scalp micropigmentation is generally determined by the amount of work necessary to achieve the desired outcome. In the consultation we evaluate how much hair you have lost, we inspect the area of the scalp that needs to be treated and decide on the density level required for a natural result. Most SMP treatments are performed in two main sessions spaced about 1 week apart. This timeline allows for adequate healing and helps achieve consistent pigment retention. Some clients may benefit from a touch-up session 1-3 months later to increase detail and enhance the overall appearance. Cost of scar concealment services: $800 to $1,000 per session, on average. For clients who suffer from Norwood 2 to 4 hair loss the price is usually between $2400 and $3400. More extensive Norwood 5 to 7 loss usually run $3,400 to $4,200. Larger projects that take three treatment sessions, scar blending and significant scalp coverage often run $4,200 to $5,200. Pricing is always tailored to the specific needs of each client.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Limiting excessive sun exposure is one of the best ways to protect your SMP investment. The intensity of the pigment can be influenced by ultraviolet rays over time. Regular sunscreen and protective headwear can help reduce fading and keep your appearance more consistent. These habits can make your treatment look natural and last longer.

How much does it cost?

The cost of treatment is based on the individual’s needs and desired results. Most clients will have two sessions to start with and a possible third session at a later date if more density or refinement is required. Scar concealment costs between $800 and $1,000 per session. Typically, categories 2 to 4 of hair loss cost $2,400 to $3,400, while categories 5 to 7 usually cost $3,400 to $4,200. Extensive coverage comprehensive treatment plans are usually between $4,200 and $5,200.

When are the payments due?

A $400 deposit is required to book treatment appointments. There is limited availability, so it often requires scheduling in advance. The balance is usually split between the first two treatment sessions. We provide financing options for clients who want to spread out payments over time.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
