FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, in Menifee is a non-invasive hair restoration method that applies plant-based pigments into the dermal layer of the scalp. Each pigment deposit is carefully applied to replicate the look of natural hair follicles. Those with full baldness can achieve a realistic five o’clock shadow, while people with thinning hair or unsatisfactory transplant results can enjoy increased density and improved scalp appearance. SMP provides a natural, durable, and low-maintenance solution to restore both the visual effect of hair and self-confidence.

How many treatments do I need?

Typically, SMP requires at least two sessions, spaced one week apart. This schedule allows the scalp to gradually absorb the pigment, as some areas may fade after the initial session. While the first treatment often shows visible improvement, the second session is critical for completing coverage and ensuring even, natural density. Occasionally, a third session is suggested one to three months later to perfect details and achieve a polished, lifelike result.

How long is each treatment?

Sessions range from two to four hours depending on the area size and treatment intricacy. The first session is often the most time-intensive as it establishes the hairline and lays the foundation of pigment. Subsequent sessions are generally shorter, though the exact time depends on how the pigment has been set and any additional work required for a natural, consistent look.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Hairline design is determined through consultation and professional evaluation. Practitioners consider your facial structure, natural hairline, and aesthetic preferences to ensure the hairline is tailored to your features. The result is a realistic, balanced, and customized look that complements your overall appearance.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

After completing your treatments and adhering to aftercare guidance, you can confidently enjoy your enhanced scalp. ZangSMP offers a one-year guarantee for pigment fading, allowing complimentary touch-ups if needed. Beyond the first year, most clients require only occasional maintenance every few years to preserve the vibrancy and natural look of their SMP.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

Touch-ups are typically recommended every five to eight years. SMP is permanent, but normal skin changes, aging, and sun exposure can gradually fade pigment. Periodic maintenance ensures the hairline remains defined, natural, and visually full for many years.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Strict adherence to the four-day post-treatment instructions is key to preserving the pigments and achieving optimal results. Clients should refrain from washing the treated area, touching or scratching it, cutting hair, or participating in vigorous physical activity. Hats may be worn immediately after treatment, and sleeping on the treated area will not disturb the pigments. A detailed PDF guide is provided, outlining step-by-step care instructions for a safe and effective recovery process.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

SMP is completely non-invasive and non-surgical, so no downtime is required. Clients can return home immediately following the session and resume work the following day. The main requirement is careful adherence to the four-day aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and the best long-term results.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Following the first session, pigments may initially appear darker or bolder than the final intended result. This is a normal stage of the healing process as pigments settle into the skin. Redness typically resolves within 48 to 72 hours depending on individual skin sensitivity. Overnight, the pigments soften and blend seamlessly with the scalp, resulting in a natural and realistic appearance that closely mimics real hair follicles.

Does it hurt?

Most clients experience less pain with SMP compared to a conventional tattoo. Pain tolerance is individual, but our practitioners focus on client comfort and employ techniques to reduce any discomfort. The procedure is performed safely and gently, allowing clients to complete it with minimal pain.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

During consultation, the practitioner assesses hair loss patterns to determine the best treatment approach. For advanced hair loss, Norwood 6 or 7, maintaining a shaved head is typically recommended to ensure pigment coverage integrates naturally with the scalp. Filler treatments work best for clients who retain some hair, allowing SMP pigments to blend seamlessly. This procedure permanently replicates hair follicles but does not generate new hair growth.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes. SMP is highly effective for hiding scars from surgery, injuries, or previous hair transplant procedures. Both FUE and FUT transplant scars can be masked, resulting in a smooth, consistent, and natural scalp appearance.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Clients undergoing filler or scar treatment should generally come with the shortest hair length they intend to maintain. For advanced hair loss, shaving the head prior to treatment is required, and maintaining that length afterward ensures seamless pigment blending.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

Our team recommends products that help maintain SMP results and preserve pigment vibrancy. For additional guidance or a free consultation on the best products, clients are invited to follow the link provided on the page.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

Shaving will not affect SMP results. The team provides recommendations for products designed to maintain pigment integrity and overall treatment quality.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

Daily shaving and regular scalp washing do not compromise SMP pigments. Since pigments are applied within the epidermis layer, they remain durable. Clients who shave regularly can maintain a natural and long-lasting SMP effect.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

SMP treatment pricing varies depending on individual requirements such as the degree of hair loss and the area of scalp coverage necessary. Most treatment plans begin with two sessions spaced one week apart, with a third session sometimes recommended one to three months later to perfect the result. Scar concealment sessions usually cost between $800 and $1,000. Treatments for hair loss levels two through four typically range from $2,400 to $3,400, while higher levels five through seven generally cost between $3,400 and $4,200. Complete coverage of the top of the scalp combined with scar concealment often falls between $4,200 and $5,200. Each plan is customized to match the client’s hair loss and aesthetic preferences.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Exposure to direct sunlight can gradually diminish the vibrancy and longevity of SMP pigments. Clients are advised to protect their scalp by wearing hats or applying high-quality sunscreen during prolonged outdoor exposure. Maintaining a consistent sun protection routine helps preserve the natural look and overall integrity of the pigments over time.

How much does it cost?

The cost of SMP is determined by the extent of hair loss and the complexity of the required treatment. The initial two sessions are generally scheduled one week apart, with a third session one to three months later as needed. Scar concealment treatments range from $800 to $1,000 per session. Hair restoration procedures for levels two through four usually cost between $2,400 and $3,400, while levels five through seven are often priced between $3,400 and $4,200. Full top-of-scalp procedures including scar coverage typically range from $4,200 to $5,200.

When are the payments due?

Clients are required to provide a $400 deposit to secure treatment appointments. An eight-week period is typically observed between sessions. The remaining payment is commonly divided equally between the first two sessions. Financing is also available for those who prefer to manage payments over time.

How do I get started?

To begin, clients can call 310-425-4975 or email info@zangsmp.com to schedule a complimentary consultation. International clients or those unable to visit in person may submit top-down scalp photos or images of scars for a virtual consultation via phone, FaceTime, or Skype. During this consultation, the practitioner reviews the treatment plan, discusses pricing, and answers any questions before the first in-person session.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
