FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?

Scalp micropigmentation in Lancaster provides a highly refined, non-surgical solution for achieving the illusion of hair restoration by embedding organic, plant-derived pigment into the dermal layer of the scalp. These pigment applications are arranged to mimic the look of real hair follicles, giving the scalp the visual appearance of fullness and overall health. For those who have no remaining hair, our practitioners can construct a realistic 5 o’clock shadow that simulates freshly trimmed stubble. Whether your concern is thinning hair or a lack of density following a transplant, scalp micropigmentation in Lancaster offers a long lasting and effective option for creating a thicker and more youthful looking scalp.

How many treatments do I need?

Scalp Micropigmentation treatments are usually structured into at least two appointments spaced around one week apart to maximize pigment retention and healing. Because the skin may release some of the pigment after the first application, multiple layers are essential for creating a complete and realistic appearance. Although most clients see clear improvements after the first session, the second session is vital for increasing density and refining the overall look. In certain instances, a third appointment can be arranged one to three months later to enhance fine details and perfect the final outcome.

How long is each treatment?

A typical SMP session lasts two to four hours, although timing can change based on the size of the treatment area and the level of detail required. The initial session is the longest because it includes mapping out the hairline and establishing the initial pigment layer. Later sessions usually take less time, but the healed outcome of the previous session will determine the pace and extent of the touch up work required.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Your hairline is determined through a careful evaluation of your natural bone structure, facial characteristics and general proportions. We ensure that the hairline appears natural and balanced while incorporating your preferences throughout the design process. Because many natural appearing hairline shapes exist, the final look is created through collaboration to ensure authenticity and aesthetic harmony.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

After completing all scheduled sessions and the required aftercare, you can enjoy your newly restored appearance. Our one year guarantee covers any pigment lightening that may occur, and we will perform any needed touch ups during that time free of charge. Beyond the first year, most clients return only every few years for maintenance to maintain the clarity and richness of their treatment.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

Most SMP clients return somewhere between five and eight years later for maintenance sessions. Although the results last for many years, natural skin renewal and aging can gradually soften the pigment. Scheduled touch ups help your hairline remain sharp, defined and natural throughout the years.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Aftercare plays a crucial role in protecting your SMP. During the first four days, avoid washing, touching or trimming your hair, and refrain from exercising to prevent pigment disruption. Wearing a hat is safe immediately, and sleeping normally will not affect the pigment. A detailed aftercare PDF is supplied to walk you through the entire recovery process.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

No downtime is required because SMP does not involve surgery or invasive techniques. Clients can return home directly after their session and resume work the following day. The only essential step is following the four day aftercare guidelines to ensure proper healing.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Right after the first treatment, you might see that the pigments appear more pronounced or vibrant due to their fresh application. As your scalp rests over the next several hours and into the following day, these pigments begin to settle and gradually adopt a natural looking softness. Any redness that may appear typically fades within forty eight to seventy two hours, although your skin type plays a role in how long that redness remains visible. For most clients, the redness becomes faint quickly. After the early healing stage is finished, the completed look blends naturally with the scalp and closely resembles authentic follicle density.

Does it hurt?

Clients regularly comment that SMP is significantly less painful than they anticipated and much easier to tolerate than a traditional tattoo procedure. Personal sensitivity always varies, but we focus on ensuring your comfort from beginning to end. Our team applies the pigment in a smooth, careful manner to help reduce irritation and keep any discomfort to a level that is mild and very manageable.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

During your consultation, whether we meet in person or complete a web based evaluation, we examine the pattern of your hair loss and determine which form of SMP treatment is most appropriate for your needs. Clients classified as Norwood 6 or 7 usually must maintain a shaved look, since SMP applied to the top of the scalp can visually clash with the longer hair that grows naturally on the sides and back. This is a permanent cosmetic procedure where hair follicles are recreated using pigment, and these pigment impressions do not grow or provide real three dimensional texture. Filler treatments, which aim to enhance density in areas where some hair still exists, are ideal for clients who retain enough natural coverage for the SMP to integrate smoothly.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes, scalp micropigmentation can also be used to hide scars in addition to treating hair loss. We frequently apply this method to cover scars created by past surgeries or accidental injuries, including FUE and FUT transplant scars. The added pigment creates a uniform and natural appearance across the scalp.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

For filler work or scar correction, clients are generally encouraged to arrive with their hair at the shortest length they intend to maintain. Your practitioner may request specific variations depending on your case. For Norwood 6 or 7 hair loss, shaving the entire head is required before treatment, and keeping the scalp shaved supports a smooth and cohesive blend.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

We provide individualized recommendations during your treatment process to ensure your SMP remains vibrant. If you would like a deeper explanation or a free consultation, the link on this page will take you to all available product guidance.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

There is no risk in shaving your head regularly. The pigments are stable, and we provide advice on choosing products that maintain your SMP over time. More details are shared on our product recommendation page.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

Daily shaving and cleansing will not impact the SMP since the pigment rests in the epidermis layer and remains secure. Many of our clients shave every day and maintain natural, realistic SMP outcomes.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

The pricing for scalp micropigmentation is shaped by several personal factors, including your level of hair loss, how much surface area needs treatment, and the type of density you hope to achieve. The process usually involves two initial sessions spaced a week apart, with an optional third session one to three months later to finalize and refine the appearance. Scar concealment procedures generally range from 800 to 1,000 dollars per appointment. Hair loss cases identified as categories 2 through 4 normally cost between 2,400 and 3,400 dollars, while more severe classifications in categories 5 through 7 typically range from 3,400 to 4,200 dollars. A full three-session package that treats the top of the scalp and includes scar blending generally falls within the 4,200 to 5,200 dollar range. All costs are determined based on the unique characteristics and goals of each individual client.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Sunlight can gradually reduce the richness of SMP pigments and may impact the texture and feel of the scalp over time. To help your treatment remain crisp and vibrant, we suggest applying a quality broad-spectrum sunscreen or wearing a hat whenever you will be outdoors for more than a brief period. Maintaining these habits consistently ensures your SMP maintains its natural appearance.

How much does it cost?

The price of SMP varies significantly from client to client due to differences in hair loss severity and the amount of detail needed. Two initial sessions spaced one week apart are standard, with the option of adding a third session one to three months later for additional refinement. Scar concealment treatments usually cost between 800 and 1,000 dollars. Clients classified in hair loss levels 2 to 4 generally fall within the 2,400 to 3,400 dollar range, while levels 5 through 7 typically cost between 3,400 and 4,200 dollars. A comprehensive treatment plan that includes full top coverage and scar work over two or three sessions tends to range from 4,200 to 5,200 dollars.

When are the payments due?

A 400 dollar deposit is necessary to reserve your appointment dates, and most bookings are made approximately eight weeks out. The remaining fees are usually divided between the first two sessions. Clients who prefer structured payment plans may make use of available financing options.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
