What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) in Lake Forest?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-surgical procedure that restores hair by inserting organic plant-based pigments into the scalp’s dermal layer. These pigments simulate hair follicles to give the appearance of a full head of hair.
We offer the 5 o’clock shadow look for those who are completely bald. If you have thinning hair or need more density after a hair transplant, SMP might be the right solution.
What are the benefits of SMP?
SMP offers a non-surgical way to increase the visual density of hair, especially benefiting those with alopecia areata or thinning hair. It helps make thinning hair look fuller and denser. This approach works well for people with healthy, normal skin who want a cosmetic option to improve their hair’s appearance. It can also assist in masking scars or areas with hair density loss after hair restoration surgery.
How many treatments in Lake Forest do I need?
To achieve the best results with Scalp Micro Pigmentation, two sessions are required, spaced one week apart. This is due to the skin’s tendency to reject some pigment following the initial treatment. After the first treatment, you will see substantial improvements, and the appearance will be more complete following the second treatment. A third session in Lake Forest may be required 1-3 months later for final adjustments.
How long is each treatment?
Each appointment lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the work required. The first session is usually the longest because it involves creating the hairline and applying the initial layer. Subsequent sessions are generally shorter but may vary based on how well the previous treatments have been retained.
Who decides on the construction of the hairline?
The ideal hairline for you is determined by several factors. We adjust the hairline to fit your characteristics to ensure the most natural appearance. Your preferences are also considered, as multiple options can look natural on different people.
I've already had 3 treatments, now what?
After following the initial aftercare steps, you can relax and enjoy the results of your SMP treatment. We offer a one-year guarantee with our plans, so if there is any pigment lightening, we will cover the cost of touch-ups. We’ll see you again in a few years!
A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?
Touch-ups are typically needed every 5-8 years. The procedure is permanent, but normal skin wear can lead to lightening of the pigment over time.
What are the aftercare instructions?
To prevent excessive fading and contamination, it’s crucial to follow our 4-day post-treatment instructions. This includes avoiding touching, washing, cutting, and exercising for 4 days. Feel free to put on a hat right after your treatment. The pigment will not smudge or leave marks on your pillows. For full aftercare guidelines, check the attached PDF.
So I don't need to take time off from work?
The Scalp Micropigmentation procedure is non-invasive and does not involve surgery. There’s no downtime required; just follow the 4-day aftercare. Many clients undergo treatment and resume their daily activities, including work, the following day.
Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?
After the initial treatment, the pigments will seem quite bold as they are freshly applied. They will soften and settle overnight. Expect the redness to diminish within 48-72 hours. How red your skin becomes depends on its sensitivity, but most clients experience a noticeable decrease in redness after 48 hours. Once the settling period is over, the treatment will look completely natural.
Does it hurt?
SMP typically causes less pain than a traditional tattoo for most clients. Pain tolerance varies, but we focus on your health and safety. Our practitioners are committed to making the process as comfortable and smooth as possible.
Do I need to keep the shaved look?
Your hair loss will be assessed either during a consultation or through a web assessment. After determining your hair loss classification, we will offer a treatment plan and recommend a style that works best with our SMP procedure.
Clients with Norwood 6-7 hair loss need to keep their hair shaved to align with the SMP coverage on the top of the head. The growth of hair on the back and sides will create a noticeable contrast with the SMP treatment. As a permanent cosmetic treatment, we use pigmentation to replicate hair follicles. The pigment will not grow or develop a 3D texture.
A filler treatment enhances the density of the hairline or crown. It is most effective for those who have some natural hair in the area to integrate with the SMP.
Do you also do scar concealment?
Yes, Scalp Micropigmentation is useful beyond just treating male pattern baldness. It can also conceal scars from past surgeries or injuries, including those from FUE and FUT transplants.
Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?
For filler treatments and scar concealment, we typically ask clients to have their hair cut to the shortest length they maintain unless they request a different arrangement. If you’re experiencing class 6 or 7 hair loss, you’ll need to shave your head before the treatment and continue to keep it shaved.
What do I do for optimal maintenance?
We will offer product suggestions for maintaining your treatment. Please refer to the link for our recommended products.
Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?
Shaving and washing your head every day will not harm the treatment, as it is situated in the epidermis layer. Most of our clients who have this procedure shave daily.
How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?
Direct sunlight can weaken the pigments and damage your treatment and scalp over time. Use a sunscreen or a hat to protect yourself if you’ll be outside in the sun for more than an hour.
How much does it cost?
The cost for SMP depends on the specific case, including the level of hair loss and the work needed. Generally, the first two treatments are one week apart, with a possible third treatment 1-3 months after the second. Scar concealment treatments are priced between $800 and $1000 each. For hair loss class 2-4, the cost ranges from $2400 to $3400. For hair loss class 5-7, the price is $3400 to $4200. Scar concealment for the top of the scalp is $4200 to $5200 for 2-3 treatments.
When are the payments due?
A $400 deposit is necessary to confirm your treatment dates with us. There is usually an 8-week wait for an appointment. We split the payments equally between the first two treatments. Financing is offered as an option.
