Best Scalp Micropigmentation in La Jolla (SMP)
FAQs
What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp micropigmentation is a sophisticated cosmetic treatment that places organic pigments into the scalp’s dermal layer to replicate natural hair follicles. This process creates a visual effect of fuller hair. Those in La Jolla who are completely bald can achieve a realistic five o’clock shadow, and individuals with thinning hair or disappointing hair transplant results can enjoy enhanced scalp density and improved aesthetics. SMP is a natural, long-lasting, and low-maintenance method for restoring the appearance of hair and boosting self-confidence.
How many treatments do I need?
SMP usually requires a minimum of two sessions spaced about one week apart. This allows the scalp to gradually accept the pigment, as some may fade after the first session. While results can be seen immediately, the second session ensures even coverage, proper density, and a natural final outcome. A third session may sometimes be recommended one to three months later for fine-tuning and perfecting the overall look.
How long is each treatment?
Sessions typically last between two and four hours depending on the complexity and size of the treatment area. The first appointment is generally the longest as it involves establishing the hairline and applying the foundational pigment. Follow-up sessions are usually shorter, but timing depends on pigment absorption and additional work needed for a flawless result.
Who decides on the construction of the hairline?
The hairline is crafted by considering facial features, natural hairline, and personal preference. Practitioners work closely with clients to ensure the hairline looks natural and complements overall facial aesthetics. The result is a realistic, balanced, and individualized hairline.
I've already had 3 treatments, now what?
After completing your SMP treatments and following aftercare instructions, you can enjoy the benefits of a renewed scalp. ZangSMP offers a one-year guarantee covering fading pigment with free touch-ups. After this period, occasional maintenance every few years helps maintain the vibrancy and defined appearance of your SMP.
A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?
Typically, touch-ups are recommended every five to eight years. While SMP is permanent, aging, sun exposure, and natural skin changes can lighten pigment over time. Routine touch-ups maintain a natural, full, and realistic appearance for many years.
What are the aftercare instructions?
Following the post-treatment guidelines for the first four days is critical for protecting the pigments and achieving the most effective long-term results. During this period, clients should avoid washing the scalp, touching or scratching the treated area, cutting hair, and participating in any physically demanding activity that could disturb the treatment. Hats may be worn immediately after the procedure, and resting on the treated area will not compromise pigment placement. Every client receives a comprehensive PDF guide with detailed step-by-step instructions designed to ensure proper recovery and the most natural, long-lasting outcome possible.
So I don't need to take time off from work?
SMP is non-invasive and requires no surgical intervention, which means there is no downtime. Clients are able to return home immediately after the procedure and usually resume work or daily activities the following day. The key is to follow the four-day aftercare instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and preserve the quality of the pigments for the best possible visual results.
Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?
After the first session, pigments may appear more prominent or slightly darker than the intended final result. This is completely normal, as the pigments require time to settle into the skin. Redness may be present but typically subsides within 48 to 72 hours, varying with individual skin sensitivity. Over the course of the first night and following days, the pigments soften and blend with the scalp to create the realistic appearance of natural hair follicles. Once fully settled, SMP is indistinguishable from real hair and looks completely natural.
Does it hurt?
Most clients report that SMP is less uncomfortable than a traditional tattoo, although pain tolerance varies from person to person. Our practitioners prioritise comfort throughout the procedure and use specialized techniques to minimize discomfort. The process is conducted in a gentle and controlled manner, allowing clients to complete their session with minimal pain.
Do I need to keep the shaved look?
During the consultation, the practitioner evaluates your hair loss pattern to determine the optimal approach for SMP. Clients with advanced hair loss, such as Norwood 6 or 7, are typically advised to maintain a shaved head to ensure pigment coverage blends naturally with the scalp. Filler treatments, designed to add density to thinning areas or crowns, work best when some hair remains to integrate with the pigments. SMP replicates the appearance of hair follicles permanently but does not stimulate natural hair growth.
Do you also do scar concealment?
Yes. SMP can successfully hide scars from previous surgeries, injuries, or hair transplant procedures. Both FUE and FUT transplant scars can be camouflaged, resulting in a smooth, uniform, and natural-looking scalp.
Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?
Clients receiving filler or scar treatment are generally asked to come in with the shortest hair length they intend to maintain unless instructed otherwise. For those with Norwood 6 or 7 hair loss, shaving the head before treatment is required. Maintaining this length afterward ensures the SMP pigments blend seamlessly with the scalp for the most natural appearance.
What do I do for optimal maintenance?
The SMP team provides guidance on products that help maintain and enhance the results of the treatment. For further information or a free consultation on the most effective products for your scalp, clients are encouraged to follow the link provided on the page.
Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?
Shaving the head will not affect SMP results. Recommended products are available to help preserve the pigment integrity and overall quality of the treatment.
Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?
Daily shaving and routine washing of the scalp do not compromise the SMP pigments. Because the pigments are placed within the epidermis layer, they remain durable and long-lasting. Most clients shave daily and continue to enjoy a natural and realistic SMP result.
How much will the SMP treatment cost?
SMP pricing is individualized based on the client’s level of hair loss and the size of the scalp area to be treated. Typically, the treatment begins with two sessions spaced a week apart, and a third session may be recommended one to three months later for refinement. Scar camouflage treatments usually range from $800 to $1,000 per session. Hair restoration for levels two through four generally costs $2,400 to $3,400, while higher levels five through seven typically fall between $3,400 and $4,200. Complete coverage of the top of the scalp including scar concealment across multiple sessions is usually priced between $4,200 and $5,200. Every plan is tailored to the client’s individual hair loss pattern and aesthetic preferences.
How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?
SMP pigments can fade over time if exposed to direct sunlight. Clients are encouraged to wear hats or use high-quality sunscreen when outdoors for extended periods. Consistent sun protection helps maintain the color, density, and natural appearance of the SMP for years.
How much does it cost?
The cost of SMP is based on the extent of hair loss and the number of sessions required. Initial treatments typically include two sessions spaced one week apart, with a third session sometimes recommended one to three months later. Scar concealment sessions range from $800 to $1,000 each. Hair restoration treatments for levels two through four are usually $2,400 to $3,400, and levels five through seven generally range from $3,400 to $4,200. Full top-of-scalp treatments including scar coverage are commonly $4,200 to $5,200.
When are the payments due?
A $400 deposit is required to reserve appointments, with an eight-week waiting period between sessions. The remaining balance is usually divided equally across the first two treatments. Financing options are available to make payments more manageable for clients.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

Thank u so much Walter and Ridd for your excellent customer service and I can't be any happier with the results. Walter is truly a master of his craft and he was able to hide my scar very well. I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
