FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?

SMP, or Scalp Micropigmentation, is a non-surgical procedure in which pigments are delicately applied to the top layer of the scalp to simulate the appearance of individual hair follicles. This treatment provides the look of fuller hair and restores visual density to thinning areas. Grapevine residents frequently choose SMP to achieve a well-defined, buzzed style, improve areas of hair thinning, or complement previous hair transplant results, offering a natural and realistic overall effect.

How many treatments do I need?

Clients in Grapevine usually need at least two sessions spaced about one week apart. The first session may lighten slightly during healing, so a second session is necessary to reinforce pigment and ensure precise detailing. Some clients may benefit from a third session within one to three months to achieve the most optimal, long-lasting results.

How long is each treatment?

SMP treatments typically last between two and four hours. The first session takes the longest, as it involves designing a custom hairline and placing the initial pigment layer. Subsequent sessions are shorter, focusing on pigment reinforcement and refining details to ensure natural and realistic results.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Hairline creation in Grapevine is a collaborative process. Your facial features, style preferences, and hair restoration goals are carefully considered by your SMP technician to design a hairline that is natural, flattering, and tailored specifically to you.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

Once three sessions are complete, clients can enjoy their results while following aftercare instructions. Grapevine clients benefit from a one-year warranty that covers touch-ups in case pigment fading occurs. Most clients will not need further treatments for several years.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

For most individuals in Grapevine, SMP touch-ups are typically unnecessary for five to eight years. While the treatment is intended to be long-lasting, sun exposure and the natural aging process may gradually diminish pigment intensity over time.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Following SMP, clients should carefully adhere to aftercare steps. Avoid water contact, limit high-sweat activities, and wait at least four days before cutting hair. Hats and normal sleeping positions are allowed. A detailed PDF guide is provided with full aftercare instructions.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

Correct. SMP is non-invasive and does not require downtime. Most Grapevine residents can immediately return to work or normal daily routines. Following the aftercare instructions ensures proper healing and optimal results.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

Immediately after the procedure, pigment may appear darker and slight redness may occur. These effects usually subside within two to three days. Once healed, the pigment blends naturally, making it difficult for anyone to detect the treatment.

Does it hurt?

Most clients experience minimal discomfort, significantly less than traditional tattoo procedures. Our team ensures that every session is comfortable, smooth, and stress-free.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

At your consultation, we will examine your scalp and discuss your goals to develop a plan that suits your daily routine. Grapevine clients with Norwood 6–7 hair loss generally need to maintain a clean-shaven appearance because SMP does not grow with hair and leaving surrounding hair longer may cause an uneven look.

Clients seeking density enhancement can have pigment applied into existing hair. This is particularly effective for thinning in the crown or frontal areas, allowing some hair length to be preserved while achieving improved visual fullness and density.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes, SMP is highly effective for concealing scars from previous FUE or FUT hair transplants and other types of trauma. Grapevine clients frequently report noticeable confidence improvements after pigment is meticulously applied to create a smooth, even scalp surface.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

For density or scar camouflage procedures, hair can remain at normal length. Clients classified as Norwood 6–7 should shave prior to treatment and maintain this shaved look afterward to ensure consistent, natural results.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

During your consultation, we provide comprehensive guidance for preserving SMP results. Grapevine clients receive tailored aftercare instructions that maximize pigment longevity, and a complimentary consultation can provide a full maintenance plan specific to each individual’s requirements.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

Shaving the head does not interfere with SMP. It is a normal part of scalp grooming, and we provide advice on proper shaving tools and scalp-care products. Grapevine clients may also consult our product guide to maintain optimal pigment results.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

No, daily shaving does not impact SMP. Pigments reside in the upper layers of the skin, so regular grooming and cleansing do not affect the outcome. Many Grapevine clients maintain a shaved style without any fading or irritation.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

Costs depend on the treatment areas and client needs. Most clients complete two sessions spaced about a week apart, with an optional third session for touch-ups. Scar concealment costs $800–$1,000 per session. Norwood 2–4 treatments range from $2,400–$3,400, stages 5–7 are $3,400–$4,200, and full procedures including scars generally cost $4,200–$5,200.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Clients should protect SMP from sun exposure to maintain pigment vibrancy. Hats or high-quality sunscreen are recommended, especially for Grapevine residents who spend extended time outdoors, to prevent UV-induced fading.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on the treatment area and whether scars are included. Scar treatments cost $800–$1,000 per session. General thinning or bald areas are $2,400–$3,400 for Norwood 2–4, $3,400–$4,200 for stages 5–7, and full procedures including scars range from $4,200–$5,200.

When are the payments due?

A deposit of $400 secures your appointment. Sessions generally have an eight-week lead time, and the remaining balance is divided across the first two sessions. Flexible financing is available for Grapevine clients.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
