FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation in Glendale provides an effective cosmetic solution if you’re looking for a viable alternative to surgical hair restoration. Practitioners implant organic pigments into the scalp with advanced application techniques to create the illusion of real hair follicles. This gives a natural appearance which can offer the illusion of thickness, improve definition of the hairline and reduce the appearance of thinning areas. A shaved head look can be achieved on clients with no or minimal hair; an increased appearance of fullness can be achieved on clients with existing hair. SMP is often chosen because of its natural-looking results and long-lasting cosmetic effect.

How many treatments do I need?

For SMP treatments, in most cases, two sessions are considered the norm. These appointments work in combination to create the appearance of volume and a natural finish. Follow-up sessions are essential to achieving consistent results, as the healing process can influence the way pigment settles into the skin. Some clients choose a third appointment for the most detail and coverage.

How long is each treatment?

A typical treatment session lasts two to four hours. The schedule depends on scalp size, hairline complexity and desired density, among others. The first appointment often requires the most time commitment as it sets the overall design and initial pigment layer.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

Each client has a hairline design made for them. We carefully evaluate facial structure and natural proportions before making recommendations. Through discussion and collaboration we develop a hairline that reflects your preferences and at the same time presents a realistic and balanced appearance.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

When your treatment is done, your job is to follow the aftercare instructions and enjoy the results. Relax knowing that any fading that might happen is covered with our one year guarantee. Long term maintenance is normally simple with touch ups as necessary over the years.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

Scalp Micropigmentation is known for its longevity and many clients enjoy their results for years before considering maintenance. Typically, touch-ups are performed between five and eight years after the initial procedure. The timing may depend on skin types, exposure to the elements, and how well the pigment holds up over time.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Proper healing is important in the first few days after treatment. Clients should avoid washing or touching the scalp, strenuous exercise or cutting their hair for the first four days. The guidelines help the pigment to settle in right. We provide a detailed aftercare document for clients to know exactly what to expect.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

Usually no long time off work is necessary. As SMP is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment, most people return to their normal activities shortly after their appointment. During the healing period, only the aftercare recommendations need to be followed as a rule.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

A little darker appearance of the scalp after an SMP treatment is not unusual. The new pigment often appears more defined at first, as it hasn't had time to settle into the skin. In the course of the next day or two the coloration tends to become less intense and more evenly distributed. You might also have some mild redness after the procedure, especially if you have sensitive skin, but it should resolve within 48 to 72 hours. The healing is going well and the treated area is looking more natural and blending in nicely with the rest of the scalp.

Does it hurt?

One of the benefits of SMP is that most clients tend to tolerate it pretty well. There will be some sensation but it is usually described as mild and much less than a traditional tattoo. Throughout the procedure, our experienced practitioners work methodically and carefully to help keep clients comfortable and minimize irritation whenever possible.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

The best hairstyle after SMP is not one size fits all. At the consultation, we carefully evaluate your scalp and pattern of hair loss before deciding on a treatment approach. Men with large bald areas generally have the best results with a close shaved scalp, where the pigment looks like the appearance of short hair follicles. There are density enhancement treatments available for clients with a lot of natural hair coverage remaining that can be used to blend SMP naturally with the existing hair, without the need for a completely shaved look.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes. Scar concealment has a lot of applications. Many of our clients want to reduce the visibility of the scars from FUT and FUE hair transplant surgery, surgical cuts or injuries. Pigment strategically placed can help to soften contrast between scar tissue and the surrounding scalp to result in a more consistent and natural look.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

The answer depends on your treatment. Clients receiving density or scar correction treatments are generally advised to cut their hair to their usual length. This allows for a smooth transition with the rest of the hair. A clean-shaven scalp usually gives the most realistic and balanced results for clients with significant hair loss.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

Proper scalp care and professional recommendations contribute to the long term maintenance. Your team provides personalised support and product recommendations to help maintain the appearance and longevity of your treatment. Recommendations can vary depending on your skin condition, daily habits and preferences.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

No. Regular shaving is a normal part of many clients’ grooming routine and poses no risk to properly healed SMP. We can also recommend products that will help scalp health and keep the overall look of your treatment looking good.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

Not at all. Frequent shaving does not interfere with the pigment once healing is finished. Because the pigment is deposited beneath the surface of the skin it is unaffected by normal shaving or daily scalp maintenance.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

The price of scalp micropigmentation is influenced by a variety of things, such as how much hair you have lost, the size of the area being treated, and the density you want to achieve. We price on a case-by-case basis after consultation, as no two clients are alike in terms of their scalp characteristics. Most SMP procedures are completed in two treatment sessions approximately a week apart. This method allows the scalp to heal and allows practitioners to slowly build up density for a more natural look. Additional refinement or detail work may require a third session several weeks later. Scar removal treatments typically run about $800 to $1,000 per session. Cases of hair loss are Norwood 2, 3 or 4 normally cost $2,400 to $3,400. More extensive hair loss associated with Norwood classifications 5 through 7 typically costs between $3,400 and $4,200. Costs of treatment generally range between $4,200 and $5,200 for an all-in package for clients looking for a full restoration which includes scar blending and some more scalp coverage. Your final quote will depend on the exact scope of your treatment plan.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Too much sun on your scalp can age an SMP treatment, so it’s wise to protect your scalp from the sun. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause pigment to fade slowly over time. Applying sunscreen to exposed areas of your scalp and wearing a hat when you are outside is an easy way to maintain your results. These protective measures can help maintain a crisp, natural appearance while encouraging long-term pigment retention.

How much does it cost?

Because clients’ treatment needs vary widely, SMP charges are determined on a case-by-case basis. Most procedures consist of two sessions approximately one week apart, with an optional third session for additional refinement. Treatments for scar camouflage generally range between $800 and $1,000 per session. “Moderate hair loss clients typically pay between $2,400 and $3,400. Advanced hair loss clients typically pay between $3,400 and $4,200,” he said. Prices for larger projects such as scar blending and full scalp restoration typically range from $4,200 to $5,200.

When are the payments due?

A $400 deposit is required from clients to secure appointments for treatment. Demand for appointment availability may mean that you need to book an appointment in advance. The remaining balance is typically divided between the first two sessions so that payments are staggered throughout the course of the treatment. We also offer financing if you want to pay over time.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

Thank u so much Walter and Ridd for your excellent customer service and I can't be any happier with the results. Walter is truly a master of his craft and he was able to hide my scar very well. I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
