Best Scalp Micropigmentation in Downey (SMP)
FAQs
What is Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP?
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a precise, non-surgical technique where organic, plant-based pigments are deposited into the scalp's outer skin layer. This application imitates the appearance of individual hair follicles, producing a fuller-hair illusion.
In Downey, this treatment is a popular option for those seeking a sharp, buzzed aesthetic due to hair loss. It's equally effective for enhancing the look of thinning hair and correcting uneven results from previous transplants by creating visual density.
How many treatments do I need?
If you live in Downey and are considering SMP, expect at least two sessions about seven days apart. The initial application often fades slightly as the skin heals. A second visit helps reinforce color and detail. In certain situations, a third touch-up session may be recommended within 1 to 3 months to perfect the outcome.
How long is each treatment?
SMP appointments are generally between 2 and 4 hours in length. The first session is the most time-intensive as it involves building your custom hairline and applying the foundational pigment. Future visits are typically quicker based on how your scalp accepts the pigment.
Who decides on the construction of the hairline?
In Downey, we ensure that the hairline design is a shared decision between you and your technician. Your goals, preferences, and facial structure are all taken into account so we can create a result that’s both flattering and highly individualized.
I've already had 3 treatments, now what?
After completing your three SMP sessions, you're free to enjoy the results—just remember to stick to the recommended aftercare regimen. Downey clients are protected by our one-year warranty: if fading happens within that period, we offer complimentary touch-ups. Most clients won’t need additional treatment for several years afterward.
A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?
For the majority of our clients in Downey, maintenance touch-ups are not needed for 5 to 8 years after their initial scalp micropigmentation treatments. SMP is long-lasting by design, but environmental exposure—especially to sunlight—and skin aging can cause pigments to fade gradually over time.
What are the aftercare instructions?
To maintain your results, follow the aftercare instructions closely. For the first four days post-treatment, avoid getting the area wet, limit physical activity that leads to sweating, and skip any haircuts. Hats are fine right away, and you can sleep without any restrictions. We’ll also send you an aftercare PDF that explains everything in detail.
So I don't need to take time off from work?
Correct—SMP is a zero-downtime procedure. It’s non-invasive, so many of our Downey patients resume their regular work and activities either the same day or shortly after. Just make sure you follow the aftercare instructions to protect the healing process.
Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?
Following treatment, the pigment may initially appear darker than expected and the skin may show some redness. These are temporary side effects that usually subside within 2 to 3 days. Once your skin heals, the pigment lightens to a soft, natural tone that mimics real hair follicles.
Does it hurt?
Most people report that SMP is much less painful than a tattoo. We take every measure to make the experience as comfortable as possible and will work with you to ensure your treatment is smooth and stress-free from start to finish.
Do I need to keep the shaved look?
During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your scalp and discuss your goals to create a plan that works for your lifestyle. If you’re in Downey and fall into the Norwood 6 or 7 range, you’ll likely need to maintain a clean-shaven look, since SMP doesn’t grow with your hair and any surrounding growth could look inconsistent.
However, if you’re opting for density enhancement, we’ll layer the pigment into your existing hair to boost its appearance—ideal for clients with thinning in the crown or front who don’t want a fully shaved style.
Do you also do scar concealment?
Yes, we do. Scalp Micropigmentation is highly effective for minimizing the appearance of scars from previous FUE or FUT hair transplant procedures, as well as scars caused by other trauma. Our Downey clients have experienced significant improvements in confidence after we’ve carefully blended pigment into their scarred areas for a smoother, more uniform look.
Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?
If you're getting SMP to boost density or hide scarring, you should arrive with your hair cut to your regular length. However, if you fall into the Norwood 6–7 hair loss classification, we recommend shaving your head before your appointment and keeping that look afterward to ensure your results remain consistent and natural-looking.
What do I do for optimal maintenance?
Our specialists will go over everything you need to maintain your results during your appointment. For Downey clients, we offer tailored aftercare guidance to help preserve your SMP as long as possible. You can also schedule a complimentary consultation through the link provided to receive a maintenance plan specific to your treatment.
Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?
There’s no need to worry—shaving your head won’t interfere with your SMP. It’s a routine part of grooming that won’t affect the pigments in any way. We offer suggestions for shaving tools and scalp-care products that work well with SMP. Downey clients can explore our product guide to keep their results looking fresh.
Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?
Not at all. Since SMP deposits pigment into the upper layers of skin, daily shaving and cleansing won’t disturb your treatment. Our Downey patients often maintain a shaved style post-SMP without experiencing fading or irritation, making it an easy and safe grooming choice.
How much will the SMP treatment cost?
Each client’s pricing is based on their unique situation and the treatment zones involved. Most clients complete two sessions spaced a week apart, with an optional third session within one to three months. Scar concealment generally runs between $800 and $1,000 per session. Treatments for Norwood classes 2–4 range from $2,400 to $3,400, and stages 5–7 typically cost $3,400 to $4,200. For full-scale treatments that include scar work, the overall cost usually ranges from $4,200 to $5,200.
How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?
It’s essential to shield your SMP from sun exposure to prolong the vibrancy of your results. We advise clients to wear hats or apply high-quality sunscreen whenever outdoors. Downey residents who enjoy outdoor activities should take special care with UV protection to help prevent early pigment fading.
How much does it cost?
Cost varies depending on the size of the treatment area and whether scar concealment is needed. Scar treatments are priced between $800 and $1,000 per session. For general thinning or bald areas, pricing for Norwood stages 2–4 ranges from $2,400 to $3,400, while stages 5–7 typically cost between $3,400 and $4,200. Comprehensive procedures combining SMP with scar correction fall within $4,200 to $5,200.
When are the payments due?
To confirm your booking, we ask for a $400 deposit upfront. Appointments typically have an 8-week lead time. The remaining balance is split between your first two sessions. If you're in Downey, you also have access to flexible financing options to make the payment process even more convenient.

Hear from our customers

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!
Laura

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

Thank u so much Walter and Ridd for your excellent customer service and I can't be any happier with the results. Walter is truly a master of his craft and he was able to hide my scar very well. I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
