FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is a specialized cosmetic treatment that involves placing organic pigments into the dermal layer of the scalp to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles. Individuals in Chula Vista who are bald can achieve a realistic five o’clock shadow, while those with thinning hair or unsatisfactory hair transplant outcomes can increase density and enhance scalp aesthetics. SMP is a natural, long-lasting, and low-maintenance solution that restores both the look of hair and confidence.

How many treatments do I need?

SMP usually requires two sessions at minimum, spaced one week apart. This allows the scalp to gradually accept the pigment as some areas may fade after the first session. The initial session provides visible results, while the second session ensures full coverage and even density. In some cases, a third session is recommended within one to three months to perfect the final look.

How long is each treatment?

Treatment sessions typically range from two to four hours depending on the area and complexity. The first session is often the longest because it establishes the hairline and applies the foundational pigment. Subsequent sessions are shorter, though timing depends on pigment retention and the additional work needed for a flawless finish.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

The hairline is designed using professional expertise combined with client input. Practitioners consider facial structure, natural hairline, and aesthetic goals to ensure the hairline is realistic, balanced, and customized to the individual’s features.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

After completing treatments and following aftercare, clients can enjoy their newly improved scalp with confidence. ZangSMP offers a one-year guarantee covering fading pigment with free touch-ups. Beyond the first year, occasional maintenance every few years helps preserve the natural appearance and vibrancy of the SMP treatment.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

Typically, touch-ups are recommended every five to eight years. While SMP is permanent, pigment can lighten over time due to aging, sun exposure, and normal skin changes. Routine touch-ups maintain a full, natural, and well-defined hairline for years.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Following the four-day post-treatment instructions is crucial to safeguard the pigments and achieve the most effective results. During this period, clients should refrain from washing, touching, cutting, or engaging in strenuous physical activity. Hats may be worn immediately, and sleeping on the treated area will not affect the pigments. A complete PDF guide is provided with detailed, step-by-step instructions to ensure safe healing and long-lasting results that appear natural and well-blended.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

SMP is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure, so no downtime is required. Clients are able to go home immediately after treatment and usually return to work the next day. The key to optimal results is following the four-day aftercare instructions carefully to support healing and ensure pigment retention.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

After the first session, pigments may appear slightly darker or more noticeable than the intended final look. This is a normal phase as the pigments gradually settle into the scalp. Redness may be present but generally diminishes within 48 to 72 hours. As pigments soften and integrate with the skin, they create the appearance of natural hair follicles. Once settled, SMP looks entirely authentic and undetectable.

Does it hurt?

Most clients find SMP less painful than a traditional tattoo. Pain tolerance varies by individual, but practitioners prioritize comfort and use techniques designed to minimize discomfort. The procedure is carried out gently and safely, allowing clients to complete sessions with minimal pain.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

During consultation, practitioners assess hair loss patterns to determine the best approach. For advanced hair loss, such as Norwood 6 or 7, keeping a shaved head is generally recommended to ensure pigment coverage blends naturally. Filler treatments work best for clients with some remaining hair, allowing pigments to integrate seamlessly. SMP replicates hair follicles permanently but does not stimulate hair growth.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes. SMP is highly effective for masking scars from surgeries, injuries, or previous hair transplant procedures. Both FUE and FUT transplant scars can be camouflaged to create a consistent and natural scalp appearance.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Clients receiving filler or scar treatments are typically advised to come with the shortest hair length they intend to maintain. Shaving the head is required for Norwood 6 or 7 hair loss, and maintaining this length afterward ensures the pigments blend naturally and appear realistic.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

The SMP team offers guidance on products designed to preserve and enhance treatment results. Clients can access further information and request a free consultation to identify the most effective products for their specific needs.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

Shaving the head will not affect SMP results. Recommended products help maintain pigment integrity and overall treatment quality.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

Daily shaving and washing do not compromise SMP pigments. Because the pigments are placed in the epidermis layer, they remain long-lasting. Clients who shave regularly can maintain a natural and enduring SMP appearance.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

SMP pricing is personalized based on individual factors including the extent of hair loss and the size of the scalp area being treated. The usual approach involves two sessions spaced a week apart, with a possible third session one to three months later for perfecting the final look. Scar concealment treatments generally cost $800 to $1,000 per session. Hair restoration treatments for levels two through four are usually priced between $2,400 and $3,400, while levels five through seven often range from $3,400 to $4,200. Complete procedures addressing both the top of the scalp and scar coverage typically fall between $4,200 and $5,200. All plans are customized to the client’s hair loss pattern and desired aesthetic outcome.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Direct sun exposure can fade SMP pigments over time, reducing the longevity and vibrancy of the treatment. Clients should wear protective hats or apply quality sunscreen when spending significant time outdoors. Consistent sun protection preserves pigment integrity and helps maintain a natural, realistic appearance for years.

How much does it cost?

SMP costs are based on hair loss severity and the scope of treatment required. The standard treatment begins with two sessions spaced one week apart, with an optional third session one to three months later. Scar concealment sessions generally cost between $800 and $1,000. Treatments for levels two through four hair loss range from $2,400 to $3,400, and levels five through seven generally fall between $3,400 and $4,200. Comprehensive top-of-scalp treatments with scar coverage usually range from $4,200 to $5,200.

When are the payments due?

A $400 deposit is required to reserve treatment sessions. An eight-week interval is commonly scheduled between sessions. Remaining payments are usually split between the first two sessions. Financing options are available to allow clients to pay gradually over time.

How do I get started?

To schedule a consultation, clients may call 310-425-4975 or email info@zangsmp.com. For clients who cannot attend in person, submitting top-down scalp photos or images of scars allows for a virtual consultation via phone, FaceTime, or Skype. During this session, the treatment plan is reviewed, pricing is discussed, and any questions are addressed before the first in-person appointment.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

I had gone to a different smp place before but wasnt happy with results. Zang Smp gave me the results I was looking for. There a reason why they have 5 stars on their reviews! Highly recommend!

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
