FAQs

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation in Burbank is a highly specialized cosmetic procedure that can help you get back the look of your hair without surgery or long downtime. The treatment uses a precise technique of carefully selected pigments to replicate the appearance of natural follicles throughout the scalp. This technique can be used to conceal thinning hair, improve sparse areas and give the illusion of more density. For clients with a full head of baldness, SMP can provide a realistic shaved-head appearance that is very similar to natural hair growth. It’s also a popular option for individuals looking to enhance the visual results of a hair transplant or to create a more youthful overall appearance.

How many treatments do I need?

Most SMP clients require a minimum of two treatment sessions. These appointments are spaced out intentionally so the scalp can recover and show how the pigment settles. Multiple sessions mean more depth, more density, and a more natural result. In some cases, a third session may be necessary for further refinement or specific cosmetic goals.

How long is each treatment?

Most appointments run from two to four hours long. It really depends on the size of the area that needs treatment and the amount of detail. The first treatments usually take longer because they set the structure of the design, while the subsequent sessions are for enhancing and adding the finishing touches.

Who decides on the construction of the hairline?

The creation of a hairline is a team effort between the practitioner and client. With our experience, we recommend shapes and styles that suit your features and match your preferences. The result is a custom design that looks natural and ages properly.

I've already had 3 treatments, now what?

Just enjoy your new look after your last session and healing period. Any fading within the first year is covered by the one year guarantee and touch-ups are provided if necessary. Most clients find their SMP looks good for years before any maintenance is required.

A "few years"? What does that mean exactly?

Maintenance schedules vary from client to client, but most people don't need a touch-up for five to eight years. The speed at which it fades can depend on things like sun exposure, skincare routines, and the natural aging process of the skin. Regular maintenance appointments help keep the treatment looking fresh and natural in the long term.

What are the aftercare instructions?

It is important to follow all post-treatment recommendations to keep your results. You should avoid activities that may interfere with healing such as washing your scalp, exercising, or touching the treated area for the first 4 days. Generally there is no problem of wearing a hat and sleeping as normal should not affect the pigment. After each appointment, detailed instructions are given.

So I don't need to take time off from work?

Most clients go back to work the next day without any problems. This is a non-invasive treatment that does not require any incisions, so the recovery time is minimal. The most important thing is to follow the after care instructions your practitioner gives you.

Will people be able to tell I have the treatment done?

After the first treatment session, clients usually see a darker and more pronounced pigment than the final result. This temporary effect is expected and is due to the fact that the pigment is newly applied. As the skin starts to heal, the appearance gradually softens and refines. There may be some redness immediately post treatment but this usually subsides within a few days. As the healing process continues and the pigment settles, the overall appearance becomes more natural, giving off the appearance of real hair follicles throughout the scalp.

Does it hurt?

Many people are surprised at how comfortable SMP can be. Everyone’s sensitivity varies, but this process is typically regarded as less painful than a traditional tattoo. Our practitioners use the pigment carefully and precisely, helping to minimise unnecessary irritation during treatment. For most clients, the sensation is so gentle that they are able to relax through the entire appointment.

Do I need to keep the shaved look?

Whether or not you should shave depends on the pattern of your hair loss. During the consultation process we take into account factors such as hair density, scalp visibility and overall treatment objectives. A closely shaved style is the most realistic look for many clients with large areas of hair loss. Because SMP is a two-dimensional representation of follicles, existing hair coverage clients may be good candidates for filler treatments that add density without the need for a completely shaved look.

Do you also do scar concealment?

Yes. SMP is often used to hide visible scalp scars. The judicious placement of pigment can help decrease contrast and yield a more uniform appearance, irrespective of whether the scar is the result of hair transplant, surgery or injury. Each scar is evaluated individually to allow treatment to be customized to achieve the most natural result possible.

Do I need to cut my hair before the SMP treatment?

Proper hair preparation is key to get the best results. For clients with filler procedures or scar camouflage, it is generally recommended to cut the hair to a manageable length, representative of how they typically wear the hair. The most realistic SMP results are usually achieved when the head is shaved before treatment if you have a lot of hair loss.

What do I do for optimal maintenance?

Proper maintenance can help preserve the look of your SMP for many years. Our practitioners will guide you with customized guidance and product recommendations to suit your specific needs. The following recommendations are designed to help preserve the health of the scalp and the overall quality of the treatment.

Do I have something to worry about when I continue to shave my head?

SMP is perfectly compatible with routine shaving. Once the scalp has healed, shaving does no harm to the pigment and does not affect the appearance of the treatment. There are many clients who shave regularly with no problems.

Will it affect the treatment if I continue to shave my head?

No, shaving and washing are normal scalp care and will not wash out the pigment. It's supposed to be stable under the skin so clients can still shave if they want to.

How much will the SMP treatment cost?

The cost of scalp micropigmentation depends on how much coverage you need and how involved the work is. The total cost depends on the severity of hair loss, size of the scalp, current density and goals of the procedure. Most clients begin with a core treatment series of two sessions, with approximately one week between sessions. The staged approach allows the pigment to settle in a natural way and creates a realistic base for the end result. Sometimes a third enhancement session is scheduled 1-3 months after the first session to increase density and fine-tune finer details. The average cost of scar camouflage services is $800-$1,000 per session. The majority of patients with mild to moderate hair loss in the Norwood 2 to 4 range will be looking at a price of $2,400 to $3,400. Those with more advanced hair loss, Norwood 5 to 7, tend to spend between $3,400 and $4,200. For larger treatment plans that involve multiple sessions for scar correction and full top-of-scalp restoration, the price range is typically $4,200 to $5,200. Each estimate is personalized to treat the client’s particular scalp condition and cosmetic desires.

How do I best protect my SMP from sunlight?

Like most cosmetic procedures, SMP is best maintained with the use of sun protection. The pigment may slowly change its appearance with repeated exposure to direct sunlight. To help maintain the quality of your results, we recommend wearing a high quality sunscreen on exposed areas of the scalp and wearing a hat whenever practical during extended outdoor activities. These simple precautions can go a long way towards the long term look of your treatment.

How much does it cost?

The cost of scalp micropigmentation depends on a few things. These include how much hair you’ve lost and how much coverage you need. Most clients have two main sessions, but can choose a third session for further refinement. Scar camouflage services are usually priced between $800 and $1,000 for each session. Hair loss classes of levels 2 through 4 generally range from $2,400 to $3,400 and levels 5 through 7 generally range from $3,400 to $4,200. More extensive treatment plans that involve scar blending and wider scalp coverage range between $4,200 and $5,200.

When are the payments due?

A $400 deposit is required to hold treatment dates. Appointments tend to fill quickly and there is often a wait for openings. Generally, the remaining costs of treatment are split between the first two sessions and financing options may be available for clients seeking more flexibility in their payments.

Just finished my 3rd session with Walter, best investment ever. I've tried everything short of a hair transplant over the past ten years and eventually stumbled upon SMP. I searched and researched the best SMP practitioners in the country and then decided to call the folks at Zang. Ridwan expertly walked me through the whole procedure and answered all of my questions.
If you're comfortable with the buzz cut look, SMP is the only way to go. And the team at Zang SMP are the real deal, true artists.

As a female, I didn't want to leave a public review in fear of someone I know seeing it - but at the same time, I want everyone to know about the amazingness that Zang SMP is!!! As someone who struggled with severe postpartum hair loss and a receding hair line, I really thought I would be a slave to hair powders and fillers for life (if not a transplant) and that has all changed!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the entire experience!! If you are female and hesitant to do this, DON'T BE!!! It will change your life!!! Huge thank you to Ridwan, Walter, and the rest of the guys at Zang!! Forever grateful!

I don't normally write reviews cause it's a waste of my time but I have to this time. Over the last 20 years, I've done 3 hair transplant procedures and I was not happy with the results. I started looking into SMP and call many places before I settled with ZangSMP. It's a bit more expensive but let me tell you, worth every pennies. After the 2nd time, everyone said there's no sign that I was ever bald. And what can I say about Walter. I couldn't thank him enough. He gave me the confident I needed and a new look in life. He's such a perfectionist and took the time to do it right and make sure I'm happy with the result. I even recommended my brother to give him a call.

These guys changed my life for the better. I have had alopecia for 10 years, wearing wigs and being generally uncomfortable. I was looking for a long-term solution to my alopecia and this was it. Ridwan is a delight to set things up with, and Walter has a real eye for the details. This is worth the money. A load has been lifted and I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is not coming here sooner!

Zang is THE most skilled and experienced SMP practitioner BY FAR. I have had multiple treatments with him to fill in the density in my hair and beard, and the results are amazing. People don't even believe I've had anything done until I show them my before/after pics. Zang is a great guy with an incredible attention to detail, and his work has restored my confidence big time. I really can't recommend him enough. 5 stars!
